INDIANAPOLIS —
Every Jeffersonville boys’ individual swimmers and relays improved from their seedings in Friday’s IHSAA state finals preliminaries at IUPUI Nataroium in Indianapolis, and six Red Devils qualified for the final heat in today’s finals.
Jeff junior Timothy “T” Martin will swim in two individual finals — the 50-yard freestyle and the 500 free — and two relays. He’ll be joined by sophomore Evan Shive, who qualified for the 100 backstroke final, and the 200 free relay team of Alec McAtee, Schmuck, Josh Phelps and Zach Krininger.
Schmuck is on all three relay finalists.
“We were awesome tonight,” Jeff coach Keith Gast said. “This was about a best-case scenario night for us.”
Martin qualified second in the 50 freestyle, just 1.21 seconds behind Austin Flager of Northridge. He’ll be joined by Luke Lete of New Albany, who swam a 21.13 and finished fifth to qualify for the championship heat.
In the 500, Martin was fourth and just off of Bloomington North’s Max Irwin’s pace. Gast believes Martin can compete for a pair of state titles this afternoon.
“Our plan for tomorrow is for T to just get in and race them,” Gast said.
Shive qualified eighth in the 100 backstroke. He’ll be joined in the final by Floyd Central’s Oscar Anderson, who finished fourth in the event a year ago. Anderson finished 18th in the 200 individual medley.
Jeff’s medley relay and 400 free relays each qualified fifth, while its 200 free relay was eighth.
Schmuck, who was seeded 25th in the 100 freestyle, finished 11th and qualified for this afternoon’s consolation heat. Shive was 20th in the 100 butterfly, while Lete was 18th.
Floyd Central senior Kyle Crater is the second alternate in the 200 freestyle after finishing 18th in Friday’s prelim. Crater was joined by Oscar Anderson, Eli Anderson and Brendon Smith to finish 20th in the 400 free relay.
Today’s finals are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
