Gianfanga resigns as Highlander head coach

Coach says its time for a new voice at Floyd Central

FLOYDS KNOBS —  After seven years on the sidelines at Floyd Central, Randy Gianfagna has resigned as the head coach of the Highlanders.

Gianfagna’s team finished 6-17 this season and lost to Jeffersonville 87-60 in the first round of the Class 4A Seymour Sectional.

“I think it’s time for a new voice at Floyd Central,” Gianfagna said of his resignation.

The Highlanders, who haven’t won a sectional championship since their Final Four year of 1989, had their most successful season in recent memory under Gianfagna’s direction during the 2009-10 campaign.

Floyd went 15-8 that season — their most wins since 1993 — and won their first sectional game since 2004. Gianfagna then guided his team to another first-round sectional win the next season, becoming the first coach to lead Floyd to sectional game wins in back to seasons since Joe Hinton in the early 1990’s.

“There’s good young kids coming up and good young returners. There’s some talent there,” Gianfagna said. “Hopefully, the program is in good standing for whoever comes in and takes over. We knew going into this past season that we would start a bunch of young kids and it would be a struggle. We started playing well at the end of the year and won our last two regular season games.”

Gianfagna, who was only the fourth ever head coach at Floyd, compiled a 63-93 record in seven years.

The Highlanders twice posted stellar defensive numbers in the Gianfagna tenure, yielding just 52 ppg in the 2009-10 and 2011-12 seasons — the best defensive marks at Floyd in over two decades.

“I want to say thanks to all the formers players at Floyd Central and the administation for giving me a chance,” he said. “The number one thing I’ll miss is being around the players and the commradery of the lockerroom. The funny things that happen on road trips and in the lockerroom, I’ll miss that stuff.”
