HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' TENNIS ROUNDUP: Noe wins but Generals fall to Brownstown, 4-1

Jeff singles players perfect in 4-1 win

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Clarksville’s No. 1 singles player Jeremy Noe was the Generals’ boys’ tennis team’s lone winner on Tuesday at Clarksville.

Noe defeated Brownstown’s No. 1 player Trey DeHart in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

“I felt Jeremy Noe did a good job of closing out and hanging tough,” Clarksville coach Stephen Welcher said.

No other Brownstown player or doubles team dropped more than three games.

“This is a rough stretch for us with back-to-back matches. We got to just hang tough and try to pick up a win when we can,” Welcher said.

Clarksville hosts North Harrison today and Providence on Thursday.

• Jeff singles players perfect in 4-1 win: All three of Jeffersonville’s singles players won 6-0, 6-0 as the 11th-ranked Red Devils defeated Seymour, 4-1.

Patrick Elliott beat Chance Smith at No. 1 singles, Shane Burke defeated Joe Kimbley at No. 2 singles, and at No. 3 singles, sophomore Dan Ott topped Ben Coomer. All three remain unbeaten on the season.

“We have such a solid lineup at the singles positions,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly said.

The Red Devils’ Tyler Mullins and Joe Nikitas also stayed undefeated with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Cody Scamacca and Luke Thomas at No. 1 doubles.

Reilly said that Seymour conceded it would lose to Elliott with its top players, so the Owls moved their top players to No. 1 doubles.

“I thought our No. 1 doubles (team) did an excellent job of handling some of the stronger players from Seymour,” Reilly said.

Jeff visits Silver Creek today.

• Mustangs edge Scottsburg: New Washington improved to 2-1 with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Scottsburg.

At No. 2 singles, the Mustangs’ Chad McKinley fought back after losing the first set — 7-5 in the tiebreaker — to beat Tyler Roberts, 6-3 and 6-0 in the final two sets.

At No. 1 doubles, the New Washington tandem of Matt Renschler and Devin Freels needed three sets to beat Bryce Petty and Evan Conder, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

“This was a real nice road win for us today,” New Wash coach Wayne Davis said. “Matt and Devin were pushed hard. But to their credit, they showed a lot of toughness and stayed focused to get the win. Chad just continues to play well for us.”

Tarren Clapp got New Wash its third point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Shea Miles.

New Wash will host Trinity Lutheran tonight.

• Lineup switch helps Borden to 5-0 victory: With a new lineup, Borden won all 10 sets and defeated Charlestown, 5-0.

“I decided to do a little mix of the lineup today,” Borden coach Fin Burton explained. “For the most part, I was pleased with everyone’s effort. (We are) continually trying to get better and work on the small fundamental things (that) will make us a better team.”

The Braves’ Brandon Beam defeated Chris Braun at No. 1 singles, 6-2 and 6-3.

“I thought Brandon Beam played one of his better matches today,” Burton observed.

Burton was also impressed by the play of the No. 2 doubles team of Clint Morris and Jared Sanders in its 6-3, 6-1 win over Keegan Fetz and Andrew Gregory.

“Jared Sanders and Clint Morris were aggressive with play today,” Burton said. “It’d be nice to continue and get points from both positions.”

Borden’s other wins came from Kyle Craig at No. 2 singles, Josh Volstedt at No. 3 singles and Matt Smith and Luke Calfee at No. 1 doubles.

Craig beat Kameron Heil, 6-3, 6-1. Volstedt defeated Ben Dekney, 6-3, 6-1, and Smith and Calfee earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jake Atkins and Kevin Heil.
