Funeral services for Delbert L. King, 84, of Jeffersonville, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Home, Market Street Chapel, New Albany, with burial in Galena Cemetery. He died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at his home.
He was born Dec. 17, 1927, in New Albany, to Arthur Townsend King and Julia Etta Lang King. He was a member of New Beginnings Community Church, New Albany, a race car driver (#15) at various tracks in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio from 1948-1955. In 1938 he joined Boy Scouts of America Troop 11, In 1947 he became Assistant Scoutmaster at Culbertson Avenue Baptist Church, the beginning of many positions he would hold with the organization, including Cub Scout Committeeman in 1958, Wyandotte District in various positions including being on the Council Executive Board as Council Commissioner of George Rogers Clark Council, and V.P. of the Council. During his 27 year tenure with Boy Scouts, he received various awards including the Silver Beaver Award, before leaving the organization in 1991. He retired from Ewald Spring & Radiator in Louisville, in 1990 but continued to work part-time until 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Purvis King; daughter, Debora Louise Koch and her husband, Paul, of Floyds Knobs; three stepsons, Greg Purvis and his wife, Diane, of New Albany, Dean Purvis and his wife, Anita, of Charlestown, and Neal Purvis and his wife, Nancy, of Greenville; two grandchildren, Amber and Star; three great-grandchildren, Payton, Sabrina, and Frankie; five step- grandchildren, Derrick, Devin, Madison, Hope and Ben Purvis; brothers, Myron King and his wife, Donna, of Jacksonville, Fla., Wayne King and his wife, Gayla, of Austin, Texas, and Allen King and his wife, Laura, of Henryville; sisters, Louise White, of New Albany, Yvonne King, of Albuquerque, N.M., Loretta Wheeler and husband, Bob, of Haines City, Fla., Doris Davis and husband, Delbert, of Canyon, Texas, and Leithea Epperson and her husband, Paul, of Sellersburg; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Wilma Louise Anderson King, and sons, Delbert L. King II and Derrell L. King.
Visitation from be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
