Daniel Haynes Utley

33; of Fayetteville, N.C.

Funeral services for U.S. Army Capt. Daniel Haynes Utley, 33, of Fayetteville, N.C. [a Kentucky native], will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 30, at the Fort Bragg Main Post Chapel. He was killed on April 20 in Bamako, Mali, while serving on a training mission in Northern Africa.

He was born on April 13, 1979, in Bowling Green, Ky., to Charles and Linda (Haynes) Utley. He was married on Sept. 25, 2004,  in Maui, Hawaii, to Katie (Michael) Utley.

Daniel graduated from Glasgow High School in Glasgow, Ky., in 1997, where he was on the soccer team and academic team. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Glasgow, Ky. He received the Sen. Mitch McConnell Leadership Scholarship to the University of Louisville. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Louisville in 2001 where he received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in political science. He was active in the McConnell Scholar program.

He joined the military in 2003 where he served in Korea, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Mali.  

He is survived by his wife Capt. Katie (Michael) Utley, of Fayetteville N.C.; his parents, Charles and Linda Utley, of Georgetown; his father-, mother-, and brother-in -law Chris and Peggy and Matthew Michael, of Gainesville, Ga.; his brothers, Charles L (Chuck) Utley and his wife Maria, of Louisville, Matthew Utley and his wife Michelle, of New Albany; his maternal grandmother, Pauline Haynes, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; nephews Matthew and Mason; and niece Marleigh, of New Albany; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, N.C., on Sunday. 

In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the National Park Foundation in honor of Daniel.
