Anthony W. ‘Tony’ Aemmer

62; Navy veteran and former New Albany firefighter

NEW ALBANY —  

A funeral Mass for Anthony W. “Tony” Aemmer, 62, of New Albany, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. He died at his birthplace on Thursday, March 11, 2010, surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly. 

He was retired from DuPont Chemicals in Louisville, and served as a firefighter on the New Albany Fire Department for seven years. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where he was a Bible study group leader and implemented Catholics Returning Home. With his wife, Carol, he initiated the “Together with Jesus” Couples’ Prayer program at OLPH. Tony was instrumental in the planning and renovating of OLPH’s Wagner Hall, and his presence is visibly felt in the craftsmanship and cabinetry throughout the church. He was an active member of the Cursillo Movement at Mount Saint Francis Center for Spirituality. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of VFW Hobart Beach Post 1693. He wore the Franciscan Cross and desired his family to accept the Holy Spirit and Jesus as their friend and savior. He was born May 5, 1947, in New Albany, to the late William A. and Helen Anne DeVore Aemmer. 

Survivors include his devoted wife of 25 years, Carol A. Marks Aemmer; children, Laura Toler of New Albany, Holly Aemmer and her wife, Edith McCawley-Aemmer, of New Albany, Tony Aemmer and his wife, Dorota, of New Albany, Michelle Miles and her husband, David, of Floyds Knobs, Mark Bennett and his wife, Emily Nicholson, of New Albany, Mark Aemmer and his wife, Jill, of New Albany, and Matt Bennett and his wife, Molly Cook, of Beloit, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; his sisters, Pat Stone and her husband, Nelson, of New Albany, Donna Condra and her husband, Jack, of Memphis, Marggie Kannapel and her husband, Wilbur, of Georgetown, and Cathy Lou Sowders and her husband, Larry, of Corydon; brothers, Robert Aemmer and his wife, Barbara, of New Albany, and Richard Aemmer and his wife, Kathy, of Floyds Knobs; sister-in-law, Linda Aemmer; and brother-in-law, Dick Black of New Albany.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, William Aemmer, and sister, Barbara Black.

Visitation will be at Generations Funeral Home, New Albany, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions in his memory to the Cursillo Movement at Mount Saint Francis Center for Spirituality or Catholics Returning Home at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
