A memorial service for Thomas Lee Murphy, 84, of Henryville, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Henryville. He died Monday, May 7, 2012, at his home in Memphis.
He was born April 7, 1928, in Henryville, the son of Raymond and Gertrude Bolly Murphy, who are both deceased. He graduated from West Baden High School in West Baden. He married Mary Carolyn Matheny on May 2, 1952, at Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church in French Lick, and the two recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University. He was a devoted Roman Catholic, husband, father and grandfather. He was an active member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a retired business owner of Tom Murphy Insurance Agency and also served as adjutant for American Legion Post 105, all in Henryville. He was a World War II and Korean War United States Marine Corps veteran, was an Eagle Scout, and volunteer Scout leader. He served on the first Henryville Junior Baseball League Board of Directors which founded the park located on Park Road in Henryville. He was a past officer, board member and volunteer firefighter with the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Henryville Kiwanis Club. He served his community in many volunteer positions over his lifetime. He coached girls’ basketball, volleyball, freshman boys’ basketball, and Little League at Henryville, he was a volunteer boys’ basketball score keeper for more than 25 years, and an avid lifetime Henryville Hornets fan.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Carolyn Matheny Murphy, of Memphis; his brother, David Murphy and his wife, Joyce, of St. Louis; his daughters, Linda Guernsey and her husband, Mark, Cindy Murphy, and Lyn Maureen Carter, and her husband, Philip, all of Memphis; his son, Jack (T.J.) Murphy, of Henryville; grandchildren, John Murphy, of North Hollywood, Calif., Cassie Guernsey, Erica Carter, and Rebecca Carter, all of Memphis, and Tara Murphy and Sean Murphy, of Henryville.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.
Enrollment in the University of Louisville Bequeathal Program and cremation has been chosen.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Henryville Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 124, Henryville, IN 47126.
