Doris LaVerne Long Chandler

85; former Madison resident






Funeral services for Doris LaVerne Long Chandler, 85, of Auburndale, Fla., formerly of Madison, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison, with interment in Grandview Memorial Gardens. She died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at St. Catherine Regional Hospital, Charlestown.

She was born March 16, 1942, in Jefferson County, to the late Rufus and Thelma Nighbert Long. She was raised in Kent and was a 1942 graduate of Hanover High School. On Jan. 20, 1942, she was united in marriage to Raymond Edward Chandler. They had two daughters to bless their home. She was employed as a supervisor with the Indiana Ammunitions Department in Charlestown for 25 years. She also farmed early in life, working and plowing with mules. In 1973, she moved to Auburndale, Fla., and worked for the Fleetwood Drapery Company until 1997, working as a seamstress. She then continued to sew at her home, making quilts and blankets to sell. She was a member of the North Madison Baptist Church in Madison and the Lena Vista Baptist Church in Auburndale, Fla. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, her church work and her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Rahe Zollman and her husband, Melvin, of Charlestown; sisters, Evelyn Liter of Madison, and Anna Ruth Harvey and her husband, Phil, of Anaheim, Calif.; brothers, Irvin M. Long and his wife, Letha, of Madison, and Carroll Long and his wife, Mary, of Pleasantview; uncle, Lee Nighbert and his wife, Sarah, of Mooreville; grandchildren, Carol Rahe White and her husband, James Lamar, Lori Wyatt and her husband, Bryan, Kathy Hall and her husband, Warren, Doris Smith and her husband, Rob, Eddie Waltz and his wife, Laura, Kimberly Sue Higdon and her husband, Greg, and Rusty Reed; 12 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Edward Chandler, who died Oct. 7, 1983; her daughter, Constance Lorene Chandler Waltz-Monroe, who died Jan. 16, 2010; granddaughter, Cynthia Lou Waltz; great-grandson, Jason Lozell; brother, Raymond K. Long, who died May 4, 2008; and her aunts and uncles, Milton and Agnes Rowlett, and Everett and Ruby Gassert.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, and from noon until time of service Sunday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Lena Vista Baptist Church, Auburndale, Fla., in her memory, and contribution cards will be available at the funeral home.
