Funeral services for Hershel Dean Witten, 71, of New Albany, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Garr Funeral Home, Sellersburg, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. He died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was a retired pipefitter for Jeff Boat and had served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of Sellersburg United Methodist Church, an honorable Kentucky Colonel, enjoyed coaching youth baseball, basketball, and softball in both Clark and Floyd counties, was a member of the Sellersburg American Legion Post 204, member of 1972 USSSA National Champion Softball Team “Jiffy Club”, IHSAA basketball official, and a member of Silver Creek’s first boys’ sectional championship basketball team (1955).
Survivors include his wife, Marita Friedli Witten, of New Albany; sons, John Witten, and Joseph Witten and his wife, Carmen, all of New Albany; daughters, Gina Fultz and her husband, Jeff, of Richmond, Ky., and Jane Shine and her husband, John, of New Albany; brothers, Gene Witten and his wife, Mary, of Louisville, and Marshall Witten, of New Albany; sisters, Rowena Gatheridge and her husband, William, of Lexington, Bea Basham, of San Marcos, Calif., and Laura Amos, of Lexington; and grandchildren, Natalie Fultz, Lindsay Fultz, Emily Fultz, Jack Shine, and Jenna Shine.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Festus , Raymond and Frank Witten.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, and after 9 a.m. Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Sellersburg United Methodist Church, Floyd Central Softball Dingbat Club, or the Silver Creek High School boys’ basketball team in his memory.
