Harry Stephen “Steve” McCartney, 62, of Menomonie, Wis., formerly of Jeffersonville, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, with a sister at his side, at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie, after his battle with cancer.
He was born in Jeffersonville, on May 10, 1947, to Harry W. McCartney and Clara L. Shelton McCartney. He grew up in Indiana. In January 1971, he joined the United States Navy until December 1975 and served the USS Butte (AE27), where he received the National Defense Service Medal. He attended “P” and “A” school in San Diego, Calif., with the U.S. Navy, and continued his education with Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wis. He was last employed with Contour Plastics Inc. of Baldwin, Wis. Prior to that, he was an assembler for McDonough Manufacturing in Eau Claire, Wis., and he worked as an electro-mechanical installer and fabrication technician at Stanford University, Stanford, Calif. He married Jane Janka of Hokah, Minn., in February of 1973 and later divorced. He enjoyed fishing, riding bike on the trails, taking walks, going to movies and continuing his education.
Survivors include his sons, Christopher McCartney of Waukon, Iowa, and Chad McCartney of Hokah, Minn.; stepdaughter, Cassie Reisenauer and her husband, Jason, of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren; his father, Harry W. McCartney; stepmother, Marjorie A. Lee McCartney, of Eau Claire, Wis.; sisters, Stephena Louise Cox, of Florida, Glenna Rae McCartney, of Kentucky, Theresa L. Hassemer of Eau Claire, Wis., Bonnie L. Lillge of Rock Falls, Wis., Gail J. Anderson-Dreher, of Elk Mound, Wis., and Amy Berlin and her husband, Dean, of Rock Falls, Wis.; along with several nieces, and nephews; and a special auntie, Pat, of Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara L. Shelton of Florida; his paternal grandparents, Harry and Mary McCartney; and his maternal grandparents, Gladys and Charles Wayne Shelton.
There will be a private memorial for the family on Saturday Feb. 13.
The family wishes to thank the Dunn County Health Care Center, Hospice of Northwest Wisconsin, and Olson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, of Menomonie, Wis., who is in charge of the arrangements.
