A celebration of life for Marian Newton Rand, 81, of Evanston, Ill., and formerly of Indianapolis, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 E. 56th St., Indianapolis. She died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, in Skokie, Ill.
She was born June 2, 1931, in Elberta, Ala., the daughter of Grant C. Newton, Sr. and Olevia (Webb) Newton, both of whom were Cumberland Presbyterian ministers. Because her father had pastored in various churches over the years, she attended schools in Gadsden, Ala., Amorita, Waynoka, and Muskogee, Okla, and graduated in 1949 from Arsenal Tech in Indianapolis. She earned her BA degree from Spalding University in Louisville.
Marian served as a claims representative in the Social Security Administration (Lafayette) and as a real estate agent Youngstown, Ohio. She was associated with Indiana University Southeast until she and her husband moved to Carmel in 1996, when she became a docent at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Survivors include her husband, Leon; her children, Debra, Paula and Marta; and her grandchildren, Julia, Jessica, Jacqueline, Elena, Trevor, Mason, Benjamin and Eleanor.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Grant and Maurice Newton.
