Marion F. ‘Hap’ Arnold Jr., 82; WWII Navy veteran and Korean War Air Force veteran

Funeral services for Marion F. “Hap” Arnold Jr., 82, of New Albany, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, Market Street Chapel, New Albany, with burial with military honors in the Edwardsville Cemetery, Georgetown. He died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at Westminster Health Care Center, Clarksville.

He was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Danville, Ky., to the late Marion F. and Susan F. Arnold. His family moved to New Albany in 1935, where he attended elementary and high school. He dropped out in his senior year, during World War II in 1945, to enlist in the U.S. Navy, staying in after the war until his 21st birthday. When the Korean Conflict began in 1950, he re-entered military service in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired after 20 years active duty and 10 years reserve time. He was a member of Shawnee Baptist Church in Louisville. He was a life member of American Legion Post 521 in Pasadena, Texas, and V.F.W. Post 1832 in Jeffersonville. He was also an antique car enthusiast belonging to the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America and the Hoosier Knob C.A.R. Club.

Survivors include his sister, Mary McKercher, of New Albany; brothers, Clyde C. and Edward S. Arnold, both of Lexington, Ky., and John M. Arnold and his wife, Betty, of New Albany; daughters, Cissy J. Boynton and her husband, Jerome, of Granitville, S.C., Sharon R. Cowden, of Aiken, S.C., and Marian E. Salmon and her husband, Phillip, of Louisville; stepdaughter, Rhonda G. Puryear of Clarksville; sons, Robert F. Arnold and his wife, Doris, of Scranton, N.C., Henry H. Arnold and his wife, Rebecca, of Aiken, S.C., Jack F. Arnold and his wife, Gina, of Scottsville, Ky., and Terrence L. Arnold and his wife, Katrina, of New Albany; stepsons, Donald E. Napier and his wife, Beth, of Siloam Springs, Ark., Timothy Knight and his wife, Sherrie, of New Albany, and Bryan McGee and his wife, Brenda, of New Albany; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five nieces; and seven nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; daughter, Janet Marie Arnold; sister, Lorraine F. Arnold; and brother, William G. Arnold.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or Kosair Children’s Hospital.
