Elizabeth Anne Shoup Burke, 74; of New Albany

A funeral Mass for Elizabeth Anne Shoup Burke, 74, of New Albany, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany, with interment in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. She died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services, New Albany, after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm Dec. 3.

She was born in Indianapolis on Jan. 30, 1935, to Audrey Mae Williams Shoup and Marion M.L. Shoup, but was raised in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Jeffersonville. She graduated in 1953 from New Albany High School. During her senior year, she was class vice-president, head cheerleader, football queen and prom queen. She received a nursing degree from the St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Louisville in 1956, and worked for several years as the office nurse for Dr. Don LaFollette in New Albany, before leaving to start a family. She married Patrick Cassin Burke on Dec. 30, 1960. She served as secretary and treasurer for Retailers Supply Company in New Albany, a business founded by her father, continued by her husband, and currently run by her son. She served on the board of directors for Community Montessori Charter Public School in New Albany.

Survivors include her husband, Patrick Cassin Burke; her children, Brian Patrick Burke of Lake Owego, Ore., Kathleen Margaret Burke of White Rock, British Columbia, Craig Cassin Burke and his wife, Diane, of Indianapolis, Barbara Ann Burke Fondren and her husband, Glenn, and Kevin Thomas Burke and his wife, Kelly, all of New Albany; her sister, Mary Margaret “Marge” McCarthy Bilsten, of Fresno, Calif.; and her grandchildren, Alexia Elizabeth Burke, Kaitlin Brianne Fondren, Kasey Brooke Fondren, Katherine McKenna Hadley-Burke, Lucas Cassin Cruz Burke, Connor James Burke, Isabella Cruz Burke, Elia Truce Hadley-Burke, Chandler Patrick Burke, and Greenley Elizabeth Burke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brother, John “Jack” Shoup.

Visitation will be at Kraft Funeral Service, Charlestown Road Chapel, New Albany from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to either the Louisville Audubon Society, c/o Ted Boehm, Treasurer, 2509 Hayward Road, Louisville, 40242 or Hospice of Southern Indiana, 624 East Market St., New Albany, 47150.
