CHEERS AND JEERS — For Aug. 4-5

JEERS

... to chicken sandwiches.

I haven’t had one in weeks and yet, oddly, I’m very sick of them. Hmm ...

CHEERS

... to a good, old-fashioned grilled hamburger on a summer day.

CHEERS

... to athletes who cry when they win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.

CHEERS

... to seeing progress on the Big Four Bridge ramp and connected park area, Big Four Station, as I near the News and Tribune parking lot every day.

There is an excitement around the construction for me, as I imagine how great an addition the pedestrian bridge and park will be to the Jeffersonville riverfront. Pair that with the continued Ohio River Greenway development and residential and commercial properties and you have a potential gold mine.

CHEERS

... to the various charitable efforts aimed at continued help for those affected by the tornadoes in Northern Clark County.

In just the past couple of weeks, the News and Tribune has published stories on a new Habitat for Humanity push to build houses for tornado victims and two churches — First Baptist in Henryville and Safe Harbor — helping out in their own way.

Let’s hope the helping continues until everyone feels their lives are back to normal.

JEERS

... to the city of New Albany for canceling Live@5 through August.

While I understand the heat has hurt attendance this summer, it’s hard to believe that we will go through the remainder of the summer without any kind of free entertainment in New Albany. While I didn’t really care for the 5 p.m. starting time, I appreciate the effort of those who organized the Live@5 program. The bands booked for the weekly event were both good and diverse.

I just think the 5 p.m. starting time is too early for most folks and the 8 p.m. closing is too early for others. It’s also hard to sell the public on something new, and then pull the plug on it for an entire month.

I would also like to see our beautiful riverfront amphitheater used a little more.

READER CHEERS

... to R. Ashebranner, Sgt. Jackson and his wife.

I fell June 29 at the Jeffersonville RiverStage and broke my leg. These wonderful people kept calm. Ms.

Jackson, I believe her name is Sheryl, went to some people there and got ice from their cooler. I really appreciate all that everyone did for me on that scary night. I ended up going from Clark Memorial Hospital to University of Louisville Hospital for surgery. I had four surgeries in 12 days, but am doing a whole lot better as I write this.
