CHEERS AND JEERS — For Sept. 1-2

JEERS

... to drivers who think it is OK to drive on the sidewalks just because there’s nothing stopping them.

Since the city razed the old Tubby’s Pizza building on Spring Street a couple months ago, I see at least two people a day drive across the sidewalk in an effort to either get into or get out of the parking lot there.

I don’t get it. There is clearly a curb here, just like there is along the rest of Spring Street. The only difference is that there isn’t a building on the other side of the curb. But that shouldn’t give people the idea it’s OK to take a short cut by driving over the curb and over the sidewalk instead of using the actual entrance off the street.

It’s disrespectful to the city to regard property so carelessly and it’s a true testament to people’s laziness. And besides, where did all of these people come from who think that’s an acceptable way to act?

CHEERS

... to News and Tribune Editor Shea Van Hoy who took the plunge into double pet parenthood last weekend by taking in Cornflake — a 12-year-old foster cat from the J.B. Ogle Animal Shelter in Jeffersonville.

It’s nice he took in the old girl so she’s not cooped up in a cage — plus his acceptance of her clears a spot for another cat who needs a home in the shelter for a while. Every time someone helps one animal there, they’re actually helping at least two. Sort of paying it forward in a way.

Other people who are interested in becoming adoptive or foster families to pets from the J.B. Ogle Shelter should call 812-282-0071.

CHEERS

... to a group of New Albany women who honored one of their mentor, Adrienne Phillips, and opened the doors to helping others last week.

The Community Women for Unity and Equity dedicated and will reopen the William O. Vance Recreation Center in New Albany. Marcia Booker, president of the Community Women for Unity and Quality, said the group hopes to reopen the center the last week of September. The Vance Recreation Center will be available on weekdays and likely for programs on Saturdays for neighborhood youth. Field trips are planned and arrangements are being made for tutoring for the kids while crafts activities are being scheduled for seniors, Booker said. She added the group hopes to be able to keep the center open as late as 9 p.m. on weeknights so children can have resources available to help with school work.

It should be a great resource to help educate and entertain people at both ends of the life spectrum.

JEERS

... to another twist in the odd saga of The Harbours Condominiums in Jeffersonville.

In the past couple of years, nasty spats and news stories have clouded the sought-after views of the condos. The latest strike came Thursday, when the Indiana Attorney General’s Office filed suit against three housing association members for allegedly breaching their fiduciary duty and committing fraud.

This comes after frequent talk of power struggles among the association and video of a resident being pushed into a pool there after a dispute.

It all just goes to prove that money doesn’t always buy you happiness.

READER JEERS

...  to the unpatriotic actions and disrespect shown by the Highlander fans at the Providence vs. Highlanders football game on Friday night, Aug. 24, regarding their action displayed during the playing of our National Anthem.

Is this your true school spirit?

— Margie Davis, of Clarksville

READER JEERS

... to Greater Clark County School Board members Christina Gilkey, Mark Pavey, Kevin Satterly and Jerry White who voted to hire an outside person from another school corporation to do a “fiscal analysis” of the budget at a cost of $5,000.

These same four board members recently hired CFO Tom Dykiel who is highly qualified at a salary higher than the previous CFO and higher than the assistant superintendent. Mr. Dykiel has written several books on school finance and told the board that he was capable of doing this analysis himself. Does the board lack confidence in their new CFO or do they just like to waste the taxpayers’ money?

Bravo to Becka Christensen, Ernie Gilbert and Nancy Kraft for voting against this totally unnecessary expense.

— Alice Butler, of Jeffersonville

Editor’s note: Butler is a candidate for November’s school board election, running against White.
