JEFFERSONVILLE —
A Clarksville man was arrested Friday for allegedly robbing an elderly man outside a Jeffersonville bank.
Jeffersonville Police Department officers were called at 10:57 a.m. as a robber was being chased from the parking lot. Jesse C. Williams, 52, was arrested a short time later.
Detective Todd Hollis said an 83-year-old man received cash during a transaction at the automated teller machine at Chase Bank along Court Avenue. The man returned to his car and sat down to close the car door when Williams grabbed the door and reached inside the vehicle, Hollis said.
The robber tried to take the cash from the victim’s hand, but the 83-year-old tried to fight him off. Williams wrestled the money away from the victim and took off running.
The man chased him and flagged down a couple of passerbys yelling that he had been robbed. Williams was chased from the area and was seen running behind a Dumpster at the Thorntons along Court Avenue.
A JPD officer arrived at that time and began searching the area. Police found Williams hiding in an unsecured supply shed next to Thorntons. Inside Williams sock, officers found the exact amount of money that was reported stolen. The victim also identified Williams as the robber.
The 83-year-old was treated at the scene for a laceration to his hand.
Williams was booked into the Michael L. Becher Adult Corrections Complex for class B felony robbery resulting in injury. He has not yet been formally charged.
