CLARK COUNTY —
Two hikers from Clarksville were found uninjured at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after becoming lost in Clark State Forest near Deam Lake.
Hampered by treacherous terrain and downed trees from last month’s tornadoes, Indiana
Conservation Officers and several other local law enforcement agencies searched for the couple for more than seven hours. They initially received a 911 call for help from the couple at about 7 p.m.
With the assistance of an Indiana State Police helicopter, Conservation officers abandoned their ATVs and hiked more than five miles into the woods to reach the couple who had started a fire to keep warm.
Once they were located the hikers, Curt Holcomb, 30, and Delta Vance, 35, told officers they
had been lost since 4 p.m. and had never hiked in Clark State Forest before their outing Saturday.
Multiple agencies, including Borden Township and Sellersburg Fire departments, Indiana State
Police and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office assisted Conservation Officers in the search.
Conservation officers are encouraging all hikers to be prepared when heading into the woods,
making sure to take necessary items like a current map of the trails, a compass, first aid kit,
flashlight and extra food and water.
