INDIANAPOLIS —
Indiana State Fair officials have hired a New York engineering firm to investigate the collapse of a metal stage that killed five people.
State Fair Commission Chairman Andre Lacy said Tuesday that officials have hired Thornton Tomasetti Inc. to handle the accident probe.
Scott Nacheman of Thornton Tomasetti says the firm was involved in a similar investigation of the 2007 collapse of the Interstate 35 Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis.
Nacheman says he and three structural engineers started their investigation Tuesday by reviewing documents related to the design and construction of the stage assembly. He says engineers also will examine the actual construction to make sure it conforms with the original design.
Also, on Tuesday, Indiana State Police say 18 people remain hospitalized following Saturday’s deadly stage collapse.
State police said Tuesday morning that the 18 patients are being treated for various injuries at Indianapolis hospitals. That’s down from 25 people who remained hospitalized as of Monday afternoon.
Police said they could not release any information about the nature or extent of the patients’ injuries due to federal privacy regulations. Three of the injured stage collapse victims are being treated at Riley Hospital for Children.
The country duo Sugarland was preparing to take the stage Saturday night when a 70 mph wind gust collapsed the metal structure.
