Jeffersonville police, fire departments respond to man with gas can, lighter

JEFFERSONVILLE — Area officials were on high alert Thursday evening after a man was found passed out in Radiotherapy Centers of Kentuckiana at 1322 Spring St. with a gas can and lighter in his hand.

Police said they were not sure what they were first dealing with after arriving to the bizarre and possibly  dangerous scenario about 8 p.m.

Jeffersonville Police Detective Isaac Parker said an employee discovered the man sitting in an area of the business and contacted authorities. The employee attempted to wake the man by yelling at him, but he wouldn’t respond, Parker said. He said police were able to look into the business and observe the man

passed out.

While SWAT was called to the scene, Parker said emergency responders did not attempt to immediately enter the business and make contact with the man due to the volatility of the situation.  

“After about 10 minutes he got up and started walking around,” he said.

Parker said after another 10 minutes the man left the building and appeared to be highly intoxicated.

The man was detained by authorities and transported to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Parker said charges are pending.

Susan Gilmore, marking manager of Clark Memorial Hospital, said Thursday night that hospital officials were alerted of the situation by authorities, but that the hospital did not go on lock down.

“We had administrators on site debriefed by authorities,” Gilmore said. “We are prepped and ready as necessary.”
