JEFFERSONVILLE —
A vacant building being used for storage in the Oak Park neighborhood of Jeffersonville was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.
The Jeffersonville Fire Department responded to the fire in the 200 block of Longview Drive near Allison Lane at about 7:45 p.m. By the time they arrived on scene, black smoke could be seen billowing from the building for miles.
JFD Chief Eric Hedrick said a JFD firefighter was transported to Clark Memorial Hospital via Yellow Ambulance with unknown injuries.
Neighbors who gathered at the scene said no one lived in the structure and that the owner of the property used the building to store various things, perhaps some antiques and maybe even an old airplane, although fire officials at the scene did not confirm the content of the building.
Several old trucks and a recreational vehicle parked near the building were also damaged in the fire.
Neighbors said that decades ago, the building was an airplane hangar at a time when there were plans to build a runway where Longview Drive is now.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known, but Hedrick said an investigation was under way.
The Charlestown Fire Department and Utica Fire Department assisted JFD in extinguishing the blaze with tanker trucks because there were complications with the water supply in that area, Hedrick said.
