Clarksville police interrupt couple copping high

Burglary call leads police to issue litany of charges

CLARKSVILLE — Two people are in jail after they were found smoking crack in a home they had broken into moments earlier, Clarksville police reported.

Dexter Jermaine Rainey, 34, of 1807 Greentree Blvd. in Clarksville, and Lacy Nicole York, 24, of 1316 South St. in New Albany, have each been charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 with six felony charges.

Clarksville Police Department officers responded to a burglary in progress call Wednesday to an apartment in Courtyard Square Apartments off of Greentree Boulevard. On their arrival, officers found the door to the home slightly open and began to search the inside of the property. Officers noted in the police report they found a device used for smoking crack in the home.

The officers then reached a bedroom in the back of home that was locked. They reported jiggling the handle on the door, which prompted York to open the door. Rainey was also in the room, police reported, and he was holding in his hand a crack pipe that was burnt at both ends.

On the top of a television next to Rainey, officers reported finding “ ... several small, white powdery rocks or crack cocaine.” The substance later tested positive as crack cocaine. Officers also located a spoon in the pair’s immediate area.

“The spoon contained a cocaine residue used for baking cocaine into crack,” according to the police report.

Each of the suspects denied ownership of the narcotics found in the bedroom.

“When I asked Rainey what the rocky substance was, he stated it was broken drywall,” an officer put into the police report. “When I told him that I believed it was crack, he said it belonged to Lacy [York].”

Officers also spoke with York, who said that Rainey had brought the crack with him, and it did not belong to her.

Police were initially called to the scene by a resident of the home who said that Rainey had walked into his home, pushed him down and forcefully grabbed a phone from his hand. The man told police Rainey had begun “ ... going through [the phone] ... ” and was verbally abusive toward him.

The man fled his home to look for anyone to call 911. It’s unclear if the man knew Rainey or York.

Rainey and York have been charged with burglary, a class B felony; possession of cocaine, a class B felony; robbery, a class C felony; and intimidation, theft, and residential entry, all class D felonies; and possession of paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor.

Rainey and York each appeared for an initial hearing Friday. The dates of their subsequent pretrial conferences had not be updated on court records as of press time.
