> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
A Louisville man was preliminarily charged by Indiana State Police following an assault reported to have occurred Wednesday morning on Interstate 65, according to officials.
Marcelo Giovanni, 31, of 11401 Saratoga Ridge Drive, is facing preliminary charges of aggravated battery, a class B felony, and domestic battery, class not disclosed. ISP were called to mile marker 13 of I-65 at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday after receiving several calls that a man was chasing and striking a woman in the interstate median, ISP officials said.
When troopers arrived, no one was at the scene.
ISP received a call from Jeffersonville police less than an hour later that a female was being treated for injuries at Clark Memorial Hospital. ISP officials said the hospital contacted JPD, which determined the incident occurred out of its jurisdiction and contacted troopers.
The woman told officers that Giovanni threw her from a vehicle during the dispute. ISP said Giovanni is believed to have transported the woman to the hospital, but when ISP responded to Clark Memorial, the suspect had left the facility. He was picked up a short time later at 3:21 a.m. by ISP during a traffic stop on 14th Street in Jeffersonville, ISP officials said Thursday.
The case is scheduled to be heard in Clark County Circuit Court No. 4.
Giovanni appeared in the court Wednesday and was advised of his rights, but he has not been formally charged by the court. During the hearing, the prosecution requested additional time to file formal charges.
Giovanni’s bond was set a $10,000 cash-only. An initial hearing was scheduled for today, Nov. 30.
