Several local students earn academy nominations

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — U.S. 9th District Rep. Todd Young on Wednesday announced his nominations for the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point and U.S. Air Force Academy, and several students from Clark and Floyd counties were on that list.

Receiving a congressional or senatorial nomination is required for admission into U.S service academies, but does not guarantee admission. Last fall, Young held an informational Service Academy Day where representatives from each school met with interested high school students. Later in the fall, those wishing to apply met with nomination selection boards made up of Southern Indiana residents put together by Young to help determine who would receive the 9th District nominations.

“The students who applied for nominations were all outstanding candidates,” said Young, a Republican, in a press release. “As a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, I know that our nominees possess the skills necessary to succeed at any of our nation’s military academies. Hoosiers should feel as proud as I do that so many young people in Southern Indiana are willing to pursue these options in service to our country.”

Young’s local nominees for 2012 include: Kyle Babiak, Borden High School, Naval Academy; Major Ricke, New Albany High School, Naval Academy; Chelsea Dean, Charlestown High School, Air Force Academy; James Elsner, Jeffersonville High School, Air Force Academy; Maxwell Murray, Corydon Central High School, Air Force Academy; Zachary Wright, Floyd Central High School, Air Force Academy; Zach Blankenbaker, Jeffersonville High School, U.S. Military Academy; Matthew Rue, Floyd Central High School, U.S. Military Academy; and John Durrett, Jeffersonville High School, U.S. Military Academy.

For students interested in applying for 2013, information can be found at http://toddyoung.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=19&sectiontree=4,19, or by calling the 9th District Office in Jeffersonville at 812-288-3999.

Indiana’s 9th District includes all or parts of Bartholomew, Brown, Clark, Crawford, Dearborn, Dubois, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Monroe, Ohio, Orange, Perry, Ripley, Scott, Spencer, Switzerland and Washington counties.
