Jeff has forfeited win over Madison

Reports say ineligible Devils played in Sept. 7 win

JEFFERSONVILLE — According to the Madison Courier, Jeffersonville has forfeited its 36-7 win over Madison on Sept. 7 for using an ineligible player.

Madison athletic director Ken Brunner and Jeff coach Lonnie Oldham confirmed the story on Sunday. Oldham said he would like to wait to see how things play out before he comments.

Jeff athletic director Lisa Stemler could not be reached for comment and did not return a message left for her.

However, Brunner said, “Lisa called me Friday afternoon to inform me [of the forfeit]. She said they had used an ineligible player. That’s all she told me.”

Oldham was suspended for the first game of the season — a 29-25 loss to Louisville Eastern — for using ineligible players in a scrimmage against Clarksville. Oldham was subsequently removed as the Jeff varsity baseball coach.

The Cubs’ win — officially by the score of 1-0 — is their first ever over the Red Devils in 36 outings.

“I was dumbfounded,” Madison coach Steve Fish told the Courier. “I know that we pour over players’ grades and physicals and practices. I just don't see how it could have happened, but they're the ones that called us and told us what happened. You have to be impressed that they policed themselves.”

The loss takes Jeff out of the Hoosier Hills Conference lead. The Devils have won four straight games on the field, all in league play, including a 63-15 win over Floyd Central on Friday.

Jeff is now 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the HHC and the Cubs are 2-3 and 1-2, pending a potential appeal of the forfeit.
