JEFFERSONVILLE —
Defending Hoosier Hills Conference champion Jeffersonville improved to 5-0 in league play with a 4-0 win over rival New Albany on Tuesday.
Jeff remains the only unbeaten and untied program in the HHC with the victory.
“That’s a big thing for us,” Jeff senior Brian Fischer said. “We won it last year and we want to win it again.”
The Red Devils improved to 8-3-2 overall after their fourth straight victory.
“I think we’re playing some really good soccer right now,” Jeff coach Carson Webb said. “I’m happy with the boys’ poise and their understanding of the game.”
The Red Devils had three opportunities to put up the first goal in the first five minutes and finally did on a Fischer goal with 35:28 left in the first half. Fischer took a pass from Jordan Vejar at the top of the box and booted the ball past Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Ryan Castleberry in the top-right corner of the goal.
Just over eight minutes later, an Alex Duckworth free kick found the head of Vejar in the box. Vejar’s header sailed past Castleberry for a 2-0 Jeff lead.
Leonard Kwitonda gave Jeff a third different scorer when his rocket got past Castleberry early in the second half.
“We can spread it out and that’s one of the things we try to do,” Webb said. “That was nice to see.”
Late in the game, the Red Devils completed their scoring when a Skyler Davis pass into the box went off a Bulldog leg and into the net for an own goal.
Fischer and Vejar finished with a goal and an assist apiece, but Fischer credited the Devil defense with an assist.
“They’re our foundation,” he said. “They do their job well and get the ball to us so we can score.”
With four games left, including HHC outings at Floyd Central on Sept. 25 and at home against Columbus East on Sept. 29 in the regular-season finale, Fischer likes where the Red Devils stand.
“Our outlook for the postseason looks good,” he said. “I like the way we’re playing. We just have to keep it up.”
