> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
Jeffersonville’s 16th-ranked tennis team won 12 of its 15 matches Saturday to earn the Jeffersonville Invitational title.
The Red Devils scored 36 points to edge runner-up Evansville Memorial by a point. New Albany was sixth with 19 points.
Austin Hunt at No. 2 singles and the freshman No. 2 doubles duo of Jack Reilly and Chase Kayrouz each won individual titles for Jeff. Hunt defeated Northeastern’s Jacob Rankin 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to win his title, while Kayrouz and Reilly got a 6-4, 6-4 win over New Albany’s Jake Kennard and Tanner Goller in the championship match.
“I felt very good with what we did at every position,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly said. “In the last round, the team had to win all of their matches to come out on top and that is exactly what happened. Physically and mentally, your players start to get tired when playing three matches in less than a 24-hour span, but as a team, we did great across the board.”
Both New Albany and Jeff kick off their Hoosier Hills Conference runs today. The Red Devils host Floyd Central. Jeff beat the Highlanders 3-2 on Wednesday.
• Providence goes 1-2 at East: Providence beat Indian Creek 4-1 and fell to Columbus East and Lebanon, 4-1 in each match, at Saturday’s Columbus East Invitational. Weston Spalding and Will Andres went 2-1 for the Pioneers at No. 1 doubles.
NEXT: Providence at Borden, today.
BOYS’ SOCCER
• Pioneers sneaks by CAI, 2-0: Providence scored a quick goal in each half to defeat defending sectional champion Christian Academy 2-0 on the road Saturday.
John “Tater” Murray scored a goal in the first minute off of an assist from Andrew Wimp to make it 1-0. Four minutes into the second half, Wimp scored on a Pierce Crawley pass.
“It was a great game,” CAI coach Will Lorigan said. “We need to focus for 40 minutes. If we can come out and focus for 40 minutes, we can play some pretty good soccer.”
NEXT: Providence (6-4-2) hosts Madison, Tuesday; Christian Academy (4-6-3) at Henryville, Thursday.
• Jeff improves to 4-0 in HHC play: Jeffersonville scored three second-half goals to defeat Bedford North Lawrence 3-1 on Saturday. The victory gives the Red Devils a 4-0 mark in the Hoosier Hills Conference.
“That was the best collective effort — from top to bottom, both JV and varsity — that I’ve seen in my three years,” Jeff coach Carson Webb praised his team. “It was a great day. I’m really proud of my team.”
Brian Fischer opened the scoring two minutes into the second half and Jordan Vejar made it 2-0 five minutes later. Austin Ali added a third goal late in the second half after the Stars had cut the deficit to 2-1.
NEXT: Jeff (7-3-2, 4-0 HHC) hosts New Albany, Tuesday.

Despite the loss, which drops the Red Devils to 1-3 in the HHC, Jeff coach Scott Epley continues to see improvements from his team.
“We played a much better game,” he said. “We’re starting to put things together. We’re real happy with how they played today compared to earlier in the season. We’re becoming a better team, though our record isn’t showing it.”
NEXT: Jeff (3-7-2) at Columbus East, Tuesday.
