Mustangs upend Christian Academy in possible Class A sectional showdown

NEW WASHINGTON — In a potential matchup for this year’s Class A Christian Academy Sectional championship, host New Washington defeated Christian Academy in three sets on Monday night at Matthews Gymnasium, 25-14, 25-15, 25-22.

Once again, the Mustangs’ top hitter was Caroline Ricks. The junior led New Washington with 22 kills along with one block.

Mustang junior setter Courtney Amick set up several of Ricks’ kills, as she made 14 assists. Junior Ashley Johnson was New Washington’s defensive leader with 10 digs, while the Mustangs’ Coari Robertson delivered three service aces.

“We played well tonight and worked hard as a team,” New Washington coach Michelle McCutcheon said. “Christian Academy did a great job and I am just glad we were able to hold them off. I am very proud of the way the girls played.”

Senior Rachel Boesing paced the Warriors with 13 kills. Christian Academy setter Alex Falcone made 14 assists. Also for the Warriors, Krista Boesing had five digs and Brooklyn Garrison made three.

“New Washington played a great match. They worked well as a team and were smart,” said Christian Academy coach Walter Pauly. “We struggled tonight defensively and with our transition.”

• Bulldogs fall to Manual: Brook McCoy and Audrey Donastorg each had six kills as Class 4A No. 10 New Albany lost at home to Louisville Manual on Monday, 25-16, 25-16, 25-20. McCoy made 10 digs, while Donastorg had seven.

Also for the Bulldogs. Kenzie Prince had 22 assists, Sara Schad made 14 digs and Alexis Lete spiked four kills.

• Red Devils down Madison: Visiting Jeffersonville won a five-set marathon match on Monday at North Harrison, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-2.

Red Devil senior Avery Brumit smacked a team-high 26 kills, while teammate MaKenzi Johnson had 11. Also for Jeff, Jena Reinhardt distributed 43 assists and Marley Edwards made 28 digs.

“North Harrison is not tall. But I give them credit because they are scrappy,” Jeff coach Tim Cox said. “We really stepped our game up in the fourth and fifth sets.”

• Braves rally past Eastern: Trailing two sets to none, host Borden came from behind to knock off Eastern in five on Monday, 13-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-8.

Shelbie Farvour paced the Braves’ hitters with 13 kills along with five aces, while teammate Morgan Mast had 45 assists, 18 digs and three aces. Also for Borden, Caitlin McKinley had 13 digs and eight kills.

“Morgan really stepped up tonight and played some defense. Leslie Beatty did a great job defensively as well,” Braves’ coach D.J. Zipp said. “We didn’t show up for the first two games, but we found a way to pull it out. We have to be more consistent, but I am happy with the win.”

NEXT: Borden (11-11) hosts New Washington, tonight.

• Pirates lose at Austin: Charlestown suffered a three-set loss at Mid-Southern Conference foe Austin on Monday.

NEXT: Charlestown hosts Class 2A No. 1 Providence, tonight.



GIRLS’ SOCCER

• Pioneers play to 1-1 tie: Visiting Providence battled Louisville Manual to a 1-1 tie on Monday night.

Senior Leah Mattingly scored on a penalty kick in the game’s 55th minute to put the Pioneers up 1-0. But Manual’s Olivia Holt deadlocked the score at one in the 65th minute. Providence goalkeeper Autumn Meyer made five saves.

NEXT: Providence (6-3-2) at South Oldham (Ky.), Wednesday.



CROSS COUNTRY

• Andrews seventh at Crawford County: Last weekend, Charlestown’s Whitney Andrews finished seventh in the girls’ race at the Crawford County Invitational. Andrews’ time was 21:34, which was 20 seconds faster than her personal-best time.
