> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
The Charlestown girls’ soccer team could not take advantage of its offensive opportunities as Bre Ricketts recorded a hat trick to lead visiting Switzerland County to a 6-0 victory at Dutch Reis Field.
The Pirates’ first chance to score came in the first half. After Charlestown’s Michaela Julian drew a Pacer penalty, Pirate freshman Sara Rutkowski set up for a penalty kick. But Rutkowski’s PK hit the crossbar and failed to go into the goal.
Later in the half, Charlestown’s Lindsey Blackwell tried to score off a header. But as the ball slowly rolled toward an empty goal, a Switzerland County defender deflected the ball away to keep the shutout intact. The Pirates could not mount a rally in the second half.
“As a coach, the second half was disappointing,” Charlestown coach Shawn Smith said. “We lost our focus and appeared to devolve into individuals on the field, as opposed to the team effort that was evident in the first half. It’s also frustrating to feel that you are taking steps backwards in your game play, considering how we played last week and in the first half tonight.”
