Kimmel snaps winless streak
Clarksville native Frank Kimmel ended a 76-race winless streak last Friday by taking the checkered flag in the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.
It was Kimmel’s first victory in the ARCA Racing Series since September 2008 at Salem Speedway. The nine-time ARCA champion now has 75 career victories, the second-most in series history. Kimmel needs five more victories to pass ARCA’s all-time victories leader, Iggy Katona.
“Anytime I can win in Indiana, it’s special,” Kimmel said after the race. “It’s such a legendary track. It doesn’t seem like it’s been (75 races) since we won. This almost feels like a first win. We won a lot of races in a lot of years. A lot of times you win races based on being smart and being there at the end, and we’re still pretty good at that.”
Kimmel led the final 43 laps of the 200-lap race. Tom Hessert placed second, followed by Kevin Swindell, Brennan Poole and Mason Mitchell. Henryville resident Darrell Basham finished 21st, while Sellersburg resident Will Kimmel was 34th.
Frank Kimmel is currently third in the point standings, 65 points behind points leader Chris Buescher. ARCA’s next race will be this coming Saturday at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.
