Mustangs improve to 9-2 with 75-55 win over WW

HENRYVILLE —  For the second straight game, the Henryville girls’ basketball team erased a large deficit to earn a comeback victory.

On Tuesday, the host Hornets erased South Central’s 29-17 halftime lead for a 50-45 Southern Athletic Conference victory.

Henryville outscored the Rebels (3-8, 1-1 SAC) 22-10 in the second half and 11-6 in overtime for its first conference win.

South Central’s Kelsey Miller led all scorers with 24 points, but the Hornets contained the Rebels’ senior star during the comeback.

“In the first half, Kelsey Miller controlled the game and made our defense pay,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “In the second half, we played with more determination and intensity. We did a much better job pressuring the basketball and helping each other out.”

Seven different Hornets scored at least three points, led by freshman Emily Hollis with 13 points, fellow freshman Emma Hendricks and junior Sadie Spears with nine apiece and senior Jasmine Harrell with eight.

“We had positives from everyone who played tonight,” Conrad said.

NEXT: Henryville (6-6, 1-2 SAC) hosts Rock Creek Academy, Thursday.

• New Wash tops West Wash: New Washington won its seventh game in eight outings with a 75-55 victory over visiting West Washington on Tuesday.

The Mustangs, who led 24-10 after one quarter, were led by Ashley Johnson, who had 26 points and five steals, and Caroline Ricks, who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Kriston Sarver added 13 points and Brooke Abbott had eight for New Wash.

“We had some mental lapses during the game that West Washington was able to capitalize on,” Mustangs’ coach Terry White said. “This is a difficult week for us, both on and off the court, since we are taking finals in the classroom. We expect our student-athletes to have their primary focus on academics.

“Since this is our last game before Christmas, we can certainly take some positives away from this game.”

Shelby Springer scored 25 of the Senators’ 55 points in the loss. Shana Keller added 11 points and six rebounds.

NEXT: New Wash (9-2) hosts Jeffersonville (5-5), Saturday, Dec. 29.
