CLARKSVILLE —
It was not a surprise that Floyd Central boys’ soccer team was able to go to Providence and come away with a victory on Tuesday.
After all, the Highlanders are considered the top team in Southern Indiana.
What did come as a bit of a surprise was the way Floyd Central (2-0-1) dominated the Pioneers in a 3-0 victory.
The Highlanders, who scored all three of their goals before intermission, outshot Providence 24-3 and took the first 18 shots of the contest.
“Definitely, I thought we played well overall,” Floyd coach Zach Watson said. “We came ready to play and we dominated the game.”
Watson said he wasn’t surprised with the result, or the way his team dominated its rivals.
“I think we were really confident coming into this game,” Watson said. “We’re on a mission to win the Hoosier Hills Conference and be one of those Final Four teams (in the regional) this year.”
As positive as Watson was after the contest, Providence coach Brandon Rogers was equally upset with his team’s performance.
“I’m kind of disappointed with the boys tonight,” Rogers admitted. “They didn’t bring the intensity or the skill that I expected them to bring. Floyd’s a good team. I’m not going to take anything away from Floyd. They came out and took it to us.”
Although the Highlanders dominated the first 20 minutes, it took them until the 23rd minute to finally break into the scoring column.
With just under 19 minutes to play in the first half, Matt Kelecy took possession near midfield and passed the ball to Chris Short down the right side of the field. Short returned a one-time pass to Kelecy in front of the goal. Kelecy’s shot sailed right of the goal, but he was fouled by Providence goalkeeper Taylor Hamblin and the Highlanders were rewarded a penalty kick.
“Chris and Matt work really well together,” Watson said. “They’re always one pass away from each other. (Kelecy) was in the right spot at the right time.”
Junior Cray Tremble was given the opportunity to take the penalty kick, and he put it by Hamblin to put the Highlanders on the board.
“Cray wanted to take it,” Watson explained. “I like to see that in somebody who wanted to step up and take it, and he put it in the back of the net.”
Ten minutes later, Kelecy took a deflection in the center of the Providence box and put the ball in the left side of the goal for a 2-0 lead. With a minute remaining in the half, Kelecy scored his second goal from the top of the box. This time, Kelecy went to the right side past Hamblin.
“Matt’s a hard-nosed player,” Watson said of the junior. “He was all-conference as a freshman and a sophomore, so we’ve been expecting big things from him, and we hope he can score one or two goals ever night.”
In the second half, Providence (1-2) was only outshot 11-3, and it got all three of its shots on goal — all three stopped by Floyd keeper Jared Clark. Two of the shots came from Daniel Wilburn.
“I know we had the skill to play with that team,” Rogers assessed. “We showed it in the second half. We got on them at halftime and they responded. We’re going to be all right.”
Despite the dominating performance over a strong team, Watson said the Highlanders are still far from where they want to be.
“I still think we have a long way to go to get where we want to be,” Watson admitted. “We’re close to putting it all together, but there’s still stuff we need to work on.”
Floyd will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts South Dearborn. The Pioneers are off until next Tuesday when they will host Jennings County.
