COLLEGE BASKETBALL: IU Southeast men, women earn victories

Grenadier men edge IU East eighth straight victory

NEW ALBANY — Indiana Unviersity Southeast improved to 15-3 by winning its eighth straight game, 98-96 over Indiana East t the Tiernan Center in Richmond on Saturday.

Terence Billups led the Grenadiers with 24 points and six rebounds. Jake Simpson added 19 points and five boards, Cameron Mitchell had 18 points and six rebounds and Greg Minor finished with 13 points and five rebounds for IU Southeast. Kegan Clark and Haris Batalevic scored nine points apiece and Kevin Mitchell had a game-high five assists for the victorious Grenadiers, who trailed 50-45 at the half. IU East led by as many as 13 points late in the first half.

IU Southeast had a big advantage in fast break points (15-6) and points off of turnovers (24-10). They also had 40 points in the paint to IU East’s 28 and the Grenadier bench outscored the hosts 37-22.

IU Southeast goes to Brescia for a KIAC contest tonight.



WOODS, WHEAT LEADS WOMEN PAST ALICE LLOYD

NEW ALBANY — Ashmere Woods had 22 points and 17 rebounds and Heather Wheat had 21 points and nine assists to lead the Grenadiers to a hard-fought 80-78 win over first-place Alice Lloyd on Saturday.

The game was close throughout. Ashmere Woods and Kortney Woods sparked the offense in the first half. Ashmere had 14 first half points and Kortney had nine.

IU Southeast (10-7, 3-3 KIAC) trailed by five at halftime but went on an 18-5 run to take control of the game to start the second half.

Wheat exploded for 16 points in the second half and was the offensive catalyst that helped the Grenadiers gain the lead in the final frame.

With IU Southeast clinging to an 80-78 lead with 4.5 seconds to play, Wheat missed her second of two free throws, but she was able to grab the rebound and burn time off the clock before Ariel Nickell stole the ball in the final seconds. Nickell could not get a shot off before time expired.

Nickell had 29 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Carla Booth added 24 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles but only eight of those points came in the second half.

Nickell — the league’s leading scorer at 24.4 points per game — took over from there, scoring 20 points in the second half to keep Alice Lloyd in the game.

The Eagles (11-7, 4-2 KIAC) were stymied by the Grenadiers’ defense, shooting just 31 percent from the field for the game, and only 21 percent in the second half. They stayed in the game by shooting 24-of-40 from the free throw line.

IU Southeast hosts Midway on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
