FLOYDS KNOBS — The first-round game in the Hoosier Hills Conference Baseball Tournament between New Albany and Floyd Central on Monday at Highlander Field got suspended by rain in the top of the sixth inning. The game will resume at 6 tonight at Highlander Field, with the Class 4A No. 4 Bulldogs leading 1-0.
New Albany (19-2) scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Clayton Poff reached base on a single to lead off the frame after Floyd Central center fielder Derek DeSpain nearly made a diving catch in shallow center field.
After Poff advanced to second base on a Zach Worrall sacrifice, he scored on an opposite-field single to left by Cameron Mullins. Poff slid home just before the relay throw reached the plate.
The Bulldogs almost added a second run in the inning. With two out and Mullins at second and Tucker Marcum at first, New Albany senior Eric Burnett smacked a single to center. But DeSpain threw Mullins out at the plate with a dart from the outfield.
Both starting pitchers were still on the mound when the game got suspended.
Through five innings, New Albany left-hander Josh Rogers gave up two hits, walked one and struck out six. Highlander right-hander Matt Powers surrendered one run (earned) on five hits, walked three and fanned four. Powers hit three batters.
Along with Burnett, Poff and Mullins, Marcum and Bulldog junior Garrett Sherrell each collected a base hit. Jacob Snodgrass and Colton Kimm had a single apiece for Floyd Central (11-8).
Tonight’s winner will travel to Jeffersonville on Wednesday in the HHC Tournament semifinal, while the loser will visit Madison in the consolation semifinal, also on Wednesday. The Red Devils defeated the Cubs in six innings in their opening-round game on Monday at Don Poole Field, 11-1.
