Local business brews up new way to enjoy World Cup

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — As the World Cup soccer tournament has become more popular in the United State, many local sports bars and restaurants have begun promoting themselves as the place to watch the international event.

New Albany’s Bank Street Brewery and the New Albanian Pizzeria and Public House have gone above simply opening its doors to soccer fans.

The two establishments — owned by Roger Baylor — have created special beers just for the month-long tournament.

Jared Williams, the establishment’s brewer for the past six years, created three new beers for each of the United States’ group matches — combining American flavors, techniques and ingredients with those of England, Slovenia and Algeria.

“The day of the (England) match, we tapped a cask (11 gallons) before the game,” Williamson said of the already sold-out American-English concoction that included English malts and yeast with American hops. “We then ran another five gallons of it and it sold out in 25 minutes. It’s been popular project. It’s been going pretty fast.”

“That really turned them out,” Baylor said.

Baylor, who describes himself as a casual soccer fan, said he this year’s tournament — and the added crowds at his restaurants — have piqued his interest.

“I’m kind of a Europhile, but I don’t live and die by (soccer),” Baylor admitted. “I’m for the home team, and it helps business. It’s something different. I think it’s fun because it’s something different and it involves the entire world and it’s once every four years.”

Baylor said since he opened the Grantline Road Restaurant — commonly known as SportTime Pizza — he’s seen an increased interest in the World Cup from Americans.

“Every cycle of the World Cup, we (see more interest),” Baylor said. “We had 20 to 25 people for a 10 o’clock game against Slovenia. That was good. The USA-England match, the place was packed. The USA matches have drawn a lot of interest.”
