CLARKSVILLE —
Daniel Ray Herrera, a left-handed pitcher for the Louisville Bats, was arrested for public intoxication in Clarksville early Wednesday morning.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said police received a call at 3:31 a.m. from a Yellow Cab driver stating he had an irate passenger in the cab with him and needed assistance.
Police responded and located the cab at U.S. 31 northbound at Lewis and Clark Parkway. Herrera, 25, was identified as the passenger and was transported to the Clark County Jail.
No official charges had been filed as of late Wednesday morning. Goodin said he had no information as to what caused Herrera to become irate.
Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden said Herrera was very polite to the jail officers. He said Herrera in staying in temporary housing near Veterans Parkways in Clarksville.
Maj. Chuck Adams of the sheriff’s department said Herrera tested at .228 blood-alcohol content.
Herrera debuted for the Reds on June 3, 2008. Herrera has pitched in 113 career Major League Baseball games, but was sent down to the Triple-A Louisville Bats on June 30. He appeared in 70 games as a rookie in 2009, posting a 4-4 record and a 3.06 ERA.
Although he posted a respectable 3.91 ERA in 36 MLB innings this season, opponents were batting .323 off Herrera.
Also, he is known for being one of the shortest pitchers in Major League Baseball history, listed at 5 feet 6 inches.
Herrera pitched a scoreless inning in the Bats win Tuesday night, and Rodden said he was released on recognizance Wednesday and was back practicing with the team later in the day.
Public intoxication is a class B misdemeanor and can result in up to 180 days in prison and a $1,000 fine.
