> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
Jeffersonville fell behind 13-0 and couldn’t come all the way back in a 63-56 Hoosier Hills Conference loss to Madison on Friday.
The unbeaten and ninth-ranked Cubs led 15-7 after one quarter and 32-22 at the half.
“We just didn’t come ready to play, again, for the fifth time,” Jeff coach Matt Pait said of his 2-3 Red Devils, who are now riding a three game losing streak.
There were 51 fouls called in the game and Madison outscored the Devils 32-13 at the line.
“We were not on the right side of that,” Pait said. “We fouled too much and put them on the line.”
Jeff’s Haley Vogen led all scorers with 15 points. Aurreeshae Hines added 14 points for the Red Devils, who outscored the Cubs 34-31 in the second half.
“We fought and fought and fought,” Pait said of Jeff’s second-half performance.
The Red Devils travel to Sacred Heart (Ky.) on Thursday.
• Pioneers get by Salem in double overtime: Providence outscored Salem 5-2 in the second overtime to improve to 5-2 with a 56-53 road win on Friday.
“We break down the season and look at games that are tossups games. Getting them on the road is tough,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “For us to win on the road, like we did last week at South Central and this week at Salem, is a testament to how hard the girls are working and how much they believe in what we’re doing.”
Nichole Tucker led the Pioneers with 24 points, including five 3-points shots.
“Tucker was unbelievable tonight,” Burden said. “She’s capable of doing that. She did it all summer. She’s been slow out of the gate. We’ve been on her about getting it going and she responded tonight.”
Lillian Hughes had a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Taylor Smallwood had seven points and 10 boards.
“Hughes and Smallwood were just animals on the glass,” Burden said. “They battled underneath against a bigger Salem team.”
Meredith Endris also had nine points and 10 rebounds for Providence.
NEXT: Providence (5-2) at Henryville, Friday.
