H.S. FOOTBALL: Providence defense comes up big in 28-7 win over Holy Cross

LOUISVILLE —

Providence held Holy Cross (Ky.) to 58 total yards in a 28-7 road victory on Friday.

The Cougars managed to score their only points on an interception return late in the second quarter.

“Our defense played very well,” Pioneers coach Larry Denison said. “Other than that interception return, we would have had a shutout tonight. It was nice to see the defense step up like that.”

The Pioneers scored a touchdown in each quarter and got on the board first with an Owen Mattingly 4-yard touchdown run. Matt Bell scored the Pioneers’ next two touchdowns on runs of 11 and 6 yards. Aaron Hickerson then put the nail in the Cougar coffin with a 47-yard touchdown run.

Mattingly rushed for 108 yards on 17 carries and caught three of Nathan Banet’s four completions for another 37 yards. Bell added 68 yards on the ground.

The Pioneers host 1-2 Indian Creek next Friday.
