COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Wheat, Woods key comeback win for IUS women at Asbury

Grenadier men prevail on road

WILMORE, Ky. — A second-half surge by the IU Southeast women’s basketball team, and strong performances by the Grenadiers’ Heather Wheat, Ashmere Woods and New Albany graduate Tionna Peters led to a 92-85 comeback win at Asbury on Saturday.

The Grenadiers (15-12, 7-7 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) struggled in the first half to get defensive rebounds, which led to 18 second-chance points for the Eagles. Trenia Barbee had 20 first-half points for Asbury. IU Southeast trailed 45-35 at the break.

The Grenadiers came out and rebounded in the second half. Asbury only had 15 rebounds in the final 20 minutes, and the teams tied with 46 rebounds between them for the game.

IU Southeast cut into the Asbury lead early in the second half. Peters and Wheat each scored and cut the lead to single digits.

Wheat scored 20 of her 29 points in the final frame. She was able to penetrate and Asbury’s defense could not stay in front, which led to foul trouble for the Eagles.

IU Southeast shot 21-of-25 from the free-throw line in the second half to help it get back into the game and eventually win it. Wheat was 15-of-17 from the line. She added eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals. 

Ashmere Woods finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Peters had 12 points.

The Grenadiers shot 26-of-31 (84 percent) from the line in the game.

Barbee added another 18 points to finish with 38 points, but she committed a key turnover down the stretch which helped IU Southeast secure the win.

IU Southeast will host Brescia on Tuesday in a Senior Night doubleheader with the men’s team. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m., with the men following at 7:30 p.m.



MEN’S BASKETBALL

• Grenadiers shoot down Eagles, 85-70: Jake Simpson had 24 points and Jeffersonville graduate Kegan Clark added 22 to lead IU Southeast past host Asbury on Saturday, 85-70.

IU Southeast (23-4, 13-1 KIAC) jumped out to an early double-digit lead behind the play of Clark and Simpson, who had 13 and 12 points, respectively, in the first half. Asbury was able to cut the lead to 38-34 at halftime.

Cameron Mitchell scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help IU Southeast pull away for good. He was 6-of-11 from the field in the second half.

The Grenadiers shot 50 percent from the field for the game and 67 percent (10-of-15) from 3-point range.

Austin Flannery led the Eagles with 19 points and Adam Delph added 17.
