LITTLE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Silver Creek 11s win in dramatic fashion over New Albany

Jeff/GRC 9-10 softball pulls off come-from-behind victory

CHARLESTOWN — The Silver Creek 11-year-old All-Star baseball team closed out its participation in the District V tournaments on Saturday at Charlestown Little League Park in thrilling fashion.

Trailing 8-3 after 4 1/2 innings, Silver Creek scored six runs in the final two frames to defeat New Albany, 9-8. It was the District V finale for New Albany.

“We just asked them to keep battling. When it is hot and muggy like this, you tend to lose focus,” Silver Creek assistant coach Kevin Smith said. “It’s nice to go out with a win.”

Silver Creek (1-2) plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within 8-6. Caleb Oakes had the biggest hit in the frame with a one-out triple to center field to knock in two runs.

Then in the bottom of the sixth with one out, Silver Creek’s Christian Stewart got hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on a wild pitch.

Following a single by Jake Jackson that moved Stewart to third, Creek shortstop Elijah Bays hit a triple to deep right field to drive in Stewart and Jackson to tie the game at eight. Then on the same play, New Albany committed a throwing error that allowed Bays to score the winning run.

“Sure, we wanted to get all the runs in the fifth, but sometimes you want to settle for just two or three runs. We wanted to nit-pick,” Smith said. “It was a total team effort.”

Silver Creek’s Brandon Schafer went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. He smacked a first-pitch solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second. Schafer also was the winning pitcher in a relief role.
