Cubs end four-game losing streak to Floyd by shooting 57 percent from floor

FLOYDS KNOBS — With all of the new age statistics that are kept in basketball nowadays, the name of the game is still putting the ball in the basket.

Madison shot a smooth 57 percent compared to Floyd Central’s 32 percent and blew out the Highlanders 63-41 Saturday night on Joe Hinton Court.

“It was half our poor defense and half they stroked it tonight,” Highlanders head coach Randy Gianfagna said of the Cubs’ offensive performance. “Right now, what teams are doing is getting our bigs in screen and rolls. [Madison’s Matt] Woolard got going early and got confident.”

Woolard pumped in a game-high 24 points for Madison (7-6, 1-4 HHC), pacing three Cubs in double-figures. Saturday night was Madison’s first win over Floyd (3-12, 0-5) since 2008.

“Our offense is struggling right now,” said Gianfagna, whose team is averaging only 44 points per game. “This weekend was one of those perfect storms where we let two teams in a row shoot over 50 percent on us. Our defense was really good early in the year and it’s kind of gone backwards a little bit.”

The first quarter was high scoring for both teams. The Highlanders’ Travis Foster poured in seven of his team-high 12 in the opening frame, the Floyd trailed only 19-16 heading to the second period.

“The first quarter we did okay but then the second quarter they let us quick shoot it and when the shots didn’t go in, we didn’t rebound it,” Gianfagna said.

The well went dry for the hosts in the second frame as Floyd shot just 2-of-13 and it trailed 33-21 going to the locker room.

Nothing improved in the third frame as the Highlanders netted just 3-of-13 buckets and was down by 19 after three periods.

“For two nights in a row, the 50-50 loose balls have just not gone our way,” said Gianfagna, whose team was just 2-of-3 from the foul line. “The free throw line is always a big key and they shot more free throws than us tonight. When we did get it in the post we didn’t score it in there. We were just not the aggresors tonight and that was the game.”

The Highlanders are back in action Friday at Seymour, which is 1-12 and also winless in the HHC.
