Charlestown game to benefit Brody

Charlestown game to benefit Brody

Charlestown will host Corydon Central in a Mid-Southern Conference game on Saturday.

The game also will be a benefit for Brody Curtis — the son of Charlestown High School math teacher Heather Curtis. Brody was born on May 24, 2011, with a very rare, serious and life-threatening skin condition called Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa. Brody is missing the protein in his skin that holds it together. When he was born, he was missing skin on his arms, hands, legs and feet.

Children born with EB are called “butterfly children” because their skin is as fragile as butterfly wings. Because of this, Brody must be wrapped from his neck down to help protect his skin from wounds and infections. At this time, there is no cure for EB.

Brody’s extensive medical treatment is very expensive, as many doctors’ appointments are required for Brody at both Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, in addition to the many medications he is required to take.

Charlestown High School encourages fans to come out and support the Pirates, as well as Brody on Saturday.

Southern Indiana United registration

Spring online registration for the Southern Indiana United Soccer Club’s recreational soccer program has started.

The program is open for children ages 4-16. All team members play at least half of every game, and there are no cuts or tryouts. Each child receives a jersey, shorts and soccer socks. Players must provide shin guards, a ball and a water bottle.

All registration is online only at siusoccer.com. Registration will last until Friday, Feb. 15. The season for younger players will begin the first week of April, while older players will start a few weeks later.

New Washington sign-ups

The New Washington Youth League will be holding sign-ups for the upcoming baseball, softball and T-ball season from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the New Washington High School boys’ basketball home game on Friday against Switzerland County.

Children ages 4-14 are eligible to play. Registration fee is $50 for softball and baseball and $40 for T-ball, with discounts being offered for families with three or more registered children.

The youth league board also will hold a meeting at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the New Washington Elementary School library. This meeting is open to the public and will include the nominations for 2013 league officers.
