SPORTS BUZZ: NFL outlook

JEFFERSONVILLE — This week, the Sports Buzz asks people at the News and Tribune about the upcoming NFL season.

1. Who is going to win Super Bowl XLVII?

Mike Reschke, Copy Editor: “The Giants because I always pick either the Giants or the Colts to win the Super Bowl. Go ahead and laugh, everyone did last year.”

Mike Riley, Sports Correspondent: “New York Giants will win the Super Bowl over the Baltimore Ravens. Top to bottom talent. However, the best game will be the NFC Championship — New York over Green Bay.”

Matt Koesters, News Reporter: “The Packers have unfinished business after bowing out early in last year’s playoffs. They’ll be better on defense and the offense will be as potent as ever.”

Braden Lammers, News Reporter: “As much as it will be the popular pick, the Green Bay Packers will not win the Super Bowl. It will be the San Francisco 49ers. As the adage goes, ‘defense wins championships’ and San Francisco’s is better than Green Bay’s.”

Greg Mengelt, Sports Editor: “The Broncos. They made the second round of the playoffs last year with a quarterback who couldn’t throw. So what’s going to happen when they get the best passer in football?”

2. Who is going to be the other team in the Super Bowl?

Lammers: “The Houston Texans will win the AFC. Why? Good running game, veteran QB with a go-to receiver and [a strong] defense.”

Mengelt: “It’s hard to believe the Packers won’t be just as good as last year and just a little bit hungrier.”

Koesters: “The majority of AFC playoff contenders took a step back this year, but I still like the Texans. Despite some turnover on the offensive line, that defense will keep Houston in games. Arian Foster remains one of the most dangerous backs in football.”

3. Who is going to be the NFL MVP?

Koesters: “Aaron Rodgers wins it again. No one else will be able to touch his numbers this year.”

Riley: “Eli Manning will be league MVP (and will back it up).”

Reschke: “It could be Peyton Manning. If he has a typical Manning season and the Broncos win their division.”

Mengelt: “I’ll say Arian Foster goes for 2,000 yards and takes the MVP award. It would be good to see a wide receiver finally win it. Calvin Johnson could definitely put up big enough numbers.”

Kevin Harris, Sports Writer: “Rodgers. He’s the best quarterback in the league right now and he will be the leader of an extra-motivated Packers team that will win the Super Bowl this season.”

4. Who will be the NFL’s breakout star?

Lammers: “Not entirely off the radar last year, Julio Jones is ready for a big season in Atlanta. He will become the main target for Matt Ryan. Rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly will quietly have more than 100 tackles this season and have a major impact on Carolina’s defense.”

Riley: “It will be a breakout season for Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and a few others will still get their share of league ink, but this will be Flacco’s year. With Ray Rice in the backfield and an aging, but not yet too old defense, the Ravens and Flacco will shine.”

Koesters: “It’s awfully early to say, but I’ll take Geno Atkins. He made the Pro Bowl last year, but he’s still not a household name. The Bengals’ DT will open more eyes this year.”

Reschke: “I’m going with Brandon Weeden, AKA, the old guy. He played minor league baseball before college, so he’s a 28-year-old NFL rookie. But I think that will give him an advantage in maturity that other rookies don’t have. And as he mentioned on John Gruden’s QB Camp on ESPN, he may be older, but he knows how to win football games.”

Mengelt: “If he stays healthy, Ryan Williams in Arizona can be a top-five running back.”
