H.S. FOOTBALL: Red Devils extend win streak over Madison, 36-7

Jeff beats Cubs for 38th consecutive time

JEFFERSONVILLE — The kickoff time of the Jeffersonville-Madison football game on Friday night at Blair Field was moved up to 6:30 p.m. to escape the wrath of severe thunderstorms approaching Southern Indiana.

However, it did not save the Cubs from the wrath of the Red Devils, who won 36-7.

The only thing that kept Jeff’s score from being higher was excessive penalties displayed throughout the game. Two Red Devil touchdowns alone were lost from penalties.

This now leaves the overall series at 38-0 in Jeff’s favor.

At the start of the game, Madison (1-3, 0-3 Hoosier Hills Conference) lost 10 yards right off the bat on a missed short pass. The Cubs couldn’t get any closer than 7 yards to a first down. At the 8:13 mark of the opening quarter, they lost the ball on a fumble. A few seconds later, Dionte Allen ran 32 yards for a touchdown.

With 6:02 left, another fumble by Madison at roughly the same spot as the first one almost proved costly. But Jeffersonville’s penalties and rallying Madison defense kept the Red Devils (3-1, 3-0) from capitalizing on the error.

During the second quarter, Jeffersonville made several scoring efforts, but it ended up losing yards as much as gaining through poor play and more penalties. With 8:20 left in the first half, the Red Devils’ Austin Hines ran four yards for a touchdown.

A conversion play made the score, 15-0. They scored again from a blocked punt, and a short pass to David Morales from Tyler Fridley boosted the score to 22-0.

With 1:47 left in the first half, Madison actually made it to the middle of the field for the first time in the game. But penalties negated progress for the Cubs.

Fridley threw another pass to Allen for a 42-yard touchdown, followed by a successful extra point to make the score 29-0.

In the fourth quarter, Fridley threw another pass to Allen for a 22-yard touchdown. At about this point, the audience saw that this was a good time to head home before the bad weather came in.

With 30 seconds left in the game, Nick Macon of Madison threw a pass to Jake Bell for the Cubs’ one and only touchdown.

“Offensively we just sputtered tonight,” Jeff coach Lonnie Oldham said. “We weren’t hitting. Defensively, we played pretty well. It was just one of those games — we weren’t crisp.”

The Red Devils will visit Floyd Central next Friday.
