CLASS A SECTIONAL: Borden cruises through first round

Braves move on to sectional semifinal with 47-21 win over CAI

BORDEN — Defending Class A Sectional champion Borden rode a fast start and stellar defense to a first-round, 47-21 sectional win over Christian Academy of Indiana Tuesday night.

The sectional-host Braves bolted to a 15-3 lead at the end of the first period and held the Warriors to just 11-percent shooting (5 of 43).

“Our defense was the key to things tonight. We were able to get some pressure on them and we were able to do a pretty good job of keeping the ball away from (Stephanie) Combs, which was important to us,” Borden head coach Terry Rademacher said. “We scored just enough to build up a nice lead.”

CAI (8-9) didn't notch its first field goal until an Emily Huffaker triple at 2:34 in the first period. The Warriors would muster just one more bucket in the first half, another Huffaker triple, and shoot just 2-of-17 over the first two frames.

“We had some good shots to open the game. They just weren't falling and that was the story of the whole night,” Warriors head coach Emy Lorigan said. “We just didn't make any shots. Borden didn't do anything that we didn't prepare for. We just didn't execute. We didn't play the kind of basketball that we're capable of playing.”

Borden (15-6) won the regular-season meeting, 43-38, at CAI on Jan. 26, but less then two weeks later the outcome was far different. Rademacher couldn't point to one single thing that made the difference.

“Each game is different,” Rademacher said. “We just shot a little better tonight and played a little better defense, and things just snow balled a little bit.”

After leading 25-13 at halftime, Borden's Erin Mikel pumped in the first eight points of the second half to post a 33-13 lead for the hosts at the 4:30 mark of the third. CAI shot 0-of-11 in the third. Allison Rademacher scored five of her 10 in the period as the Braves outscored the Warriors 18-2 and led by 28 entering the final quarter.

“We were just trying to be smoother and get some better shots than we were getting in the second quarter, and Mikel happened to get those shots and knock them down,” Rademacher said of the key opening minutes of the third stanza.

Mikel led all scorers with 16, while Abby Ellis put in 11 off the bench to put three Braves in double figures.

“Erin Mikel is a great player,” Lorigan said. “She took the game over in the third and did what you expect a star player to do. She put it out of reach and we just couldn't get anything going tonight.”

Borden forced 22 CAI miscues and controlled the backboards to a 43-32 tune. Stephanie Combs led the Warriors with eight points.

“Borden had a great game plan to try to shut down Stephanie (Combs) and everyone else seemed to just stand around and watch,” Lorigan said. “When we got some decent looks we just didn't knock them down. When you shoot 5-of-43 from the field you can't expect to win ballgames.”

The Braves will play Rock Creek Community Academy in the first semifinal Friday night at 6 p.m. In Game 2 Tuesday, South Central defeated Lanesville 57-37 to advance to Friday's second semifinal versus New Washington.
