CLASS 4A SECTIONAL: Highlanders lose in double OT to Seymour; Jeff falls to BNL

SEYMOUR — It was a heartbreaking night for the Clark-Floyd area in the first round of the Class 4A Seymour Sectional.

Defending Class 4A state champion Jeffersonville saw its season come to an end in the sectional opener, falling to Hoosier Hills Conference champion Bedford North Lawrence at Scott Gym, 59-45.

In the second first-round game, Floyd Central lost a nailbiter to the host Owls in double overtime, 85-79.

The Stars advance to play Jennings County (0-20) in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. on Friday. Seymour will face New Albany in the second semi at approximately 7:30 p.m.

SEYMOUR-FLOYD CENTRAL

With 1:07 left in regulation, Niki Bruno made a putback basket to give the Highlanders (12-10) a 63-60 lead. But after a Seymour timeout, Owls’ standout Amanda Moore converted a three-point play to tie the game at 63 at the 57-second mark.

Both teams had a chance to go ahead in the final 30 seconds. Floyd Central’s Brooke Hinton missed a layup, while Seymour’s Logan Personett misfired on a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation as the game went to overtime.

With 4.9 ticks left in the first OT, junior Brianna Gillaspy put the Owls (17-4) up three points by knocking down a pair of free throws.

But after the second foul shot went through the net, Hinton took the inbounds pass, pulled up on the right wing and swished a 3 at the buzzer to force the second overtime.

Seymour pulled away in the second OT by hitting its free throws. The Owls were 8-of-10 from the stripe in the extra session.

Junior Sidney Carr gave Seymour an 83-77 lead at the 1:10 mark after making 1-of-2 foul shots. Hinton answered with a bucket with less than a minute left to pull the Highlanders within four. But Gillaspy sealed the victory with 31.6 seconds remaining by converting two foul shots.

Hinton led Floyd Central with 28 points, scoring 20 in the second half and both overtimes combined. Teammate Kelsey Mayfield had 16 points, while Bruno and the Highlanders’ Riley Kaiser each tallied 15. Bruno grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Moore scored a game-high 36 points. Personett had 15 points and Gillaspy tallied 13.

Floyd Central’s defense made life miserable for the Owls all night, as the Highlanders forced 26 turnovers.

JEFF-BEDFORD

Turnovers and porous field-goal shooting were the main reasons Jeff’s season came to an end.

The Red Devils (9-11) committed 22 turnovers, which squandered several chances for them to stay within striking distance of Bedford (20-2) in the second half.

“Turnovers will hurt any team. Twenty-two are too many,” Jeff head coach Jana Costner said. “But I felt like the girls played really hard today.”

The Red Devils shot 18-of-43 from the field (41.9 percent) and 1-of-11 from 3-point range (9.1 percent).

The Stars focused on slowing down Jeff tough tandem of Jalynn McClain and Lakin Roland. Roland scored 12 points, while McClain had eight points and six rebounds.

“We knew we had to do a nice job on them,” BNL head coach Kurt Godlevske said. “I just thought we beat a good team today.”

One Red Devil who helped keep Jeff’s head above water in Haley Vogen. The sophomore scored a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor, and grabbed five rebounds.

“Haley is a scorer. That’s the main thing she does really well,” Costner said. “That’s what she brings to the table.”

Jeff guard LaVada Roberson poured in eight points.

Sophomore Sammy Dillman paced the Stars with 21 points. BNL freshman Dominique McBryde wound up with 11 points.
