> SOUTHERN INDIANA — New Albany followed last season’s 16-6 record in coach Tammy Geron’s debut with a 67-44 season-opening win over Evansville North on Saturday.

“We played with a lot of intensity from the start by applying pressure defensively and kept a 10-point lead most of the ball game after the first quarter,” Geron said of Saturday’s performance.

Senior Tanner Marcum led the Bulldogs with 21 points, seven steals, six rebounds and four assists.

“Tanner had a great game,” Geron said. “She is our leader and we follow her lead on both ends of the floor.”

Temple Ricke, who nailed three 3-point shots, and freshman Jenna Shine added 13 points apiece for New Albany. Stephanie Iglesias knocked down a pair of 3s and finished with six points.

In all, 10 different Bulldogs scored in the opener.

“We got into a lot of foul trouble and played a lot of kids,” Geron said. “I was so proud of our players coming off the bench and maintaining intesity, giving us big minutes, especially in the third quarter when three starters had three fouls.”

New Albany is back in action next on Friday when it hosts 2-1 Providence.

• New Wash blitzes Shawe: Caroline Ricks scored 17 points and Kriston Sarver added 16 as New Washington improved to 2-0 with a 70-18 win at Madison Shawe on Saturday.

The Mustangs led 29-0 after one quarter, 42-7 at the half and 58-9 at the third quarter break.

Jenna Armstrong led the Hilltoppers with 10 points.

• Dragons get big win in opener: Silver Creek went on the road Friday without one of its best players — center Kristi Molck — and came away with a 44-41 win over a strong Seymour team.

“It was a grat win for us to go up there and win,” Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “Seymour’s athletic and long and they play hard and they already had a game under their belt.”

The Dragons jumped on top 15-7 at the end of one quarter and held off the Owls for the first win of the season.

“We got off to a really good start, moving the ball well,” Schoen said.

Lexi McFarland led the Dragons with 13 points, including three 3-point shots. Kelsi Scott added eight and Emily Clayton and Alex Tinsley scored six apiece.

Schoen also praised his bench, which was forced into extra minutes with several Dragons in foul trouble. Hannah Mattingly, who didn’t even appear in the team’s varsity roster, had four points with Molck out.

“Our bench played tremendous,” Schoen said. “Not just Mattingly, but Alexis Barnett, Casie Toby and Tori Martin. They had to play a lot of minutes and really stepped up. They rebounded and defended and did a great job.”

• Second quarter dooms Highlanders: Evansville Harrison outscored Floyd Central 22-8 in the second quarter of a 61-58 victory over the visiting Highlanders in both teams’ season opener on Friday.

Take away the second quarter and Floyd had a 50-39 advantage.

“We won three quarters and lost the game,” Highlanders second-year coach Kirk Hamsley said.

The difference was at the foul line in the second quarter. The Warriors made 10 of their 14 free throws in the period, while Floyd went 4 of 10.

The fouls also got Floyd into foul trouble and changed the pace of the game after the Highlanders jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one period.

“They hit their free throws and we didn’t,” Hamsley said. “[The free throw shooting] slowed the game down and changed the pace and that hurt us.”

Tori Kingsley led the Highlanders with 15 points. Madison Kaisier (13) and Riley Kaiser (10) combined for 23. Brooke Hinton, who was in and out of the lineup with a sprained ankle, contributed with 11. Niki Bruno finished with five points and a team-best 10 boards.

India Davis led the Warriors with 16 points.
