BASEBALL: Bulldogs advance to Sajko Invite final

New Albany downs North Harrison, 11-7; Pioneers lose

NEW ALBANY — The New Albany baseball team advanced to tonight’s championship game of the Stan Sajko Invitational at Mount Tabor Field with an  11-7 victory over Class 3A No. 5 North Harrison in Friday’s semifinals.

Zach Worrall had a big game for the Class 4A No. 5 Bulldogs. Worrall went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs.

Teammates Jordan Striegel and Garrett Sherrell each went 3-for-4. Sherrell knocked in two runs, while Striegel had one RBI. Also for New Albany (24-3), Jaron Forte had two RBIs.

Bulldogs’ starting pitcher Brandon Johnson got the victory, improving his record to 4-2. In 5 1/3 innings, Johnson allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

New Albany relief pitcher Shane Robison threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get his first save of 2012. Robison gave up one hit and struck out two.

Providence lost the second semifinal to Class 3A No. 6 Corydon, 8-3. The Panthers (19-4) led 5-1 after five innings before the Pioneers (12-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within two runs. But Corydon iced the game in the top of the seventh with three runs.

Providence’s Jon Davis was the losing pitcher. The Pioneers managed only one hit in the contest.

Tonight’s tournament action will start at 5 p.m. with North Harrison (19-4) playing Providence in the consolation game. The Bulldogs will host Corydon in the championship game at about 7:30 p.m.
