H.S. ROUNDUP: Wallace scores twice as Pioneers blank Jeff, 5-0

New Albany volleyball pulls out win over Madison

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Providence girls’ soccer team dominated host Jeffersonville on Thursday night with a 5-0 victory, outshooting the Red Devils on goal 26-1.

The Pioneers’ Savanna Kersteins scored the first goal off an assist from Erin Duncan at the 28th minute of the match. Three minutes later, Kasey Wallace made an unassisted goal to put Providence up 2-0.

Alyssa Jones connected on the Pioneers’ third score at the 55th minute of the contest on a Wallace assist. Five minutes later, Wallace scored her second goal of the game with help from an assist from Mikayla Heavrin.

Providence’s final score was at the 63rd-minute mark, as Emma Roesner received a Sarah Posante pass and booted in the goal.

NEXT: Providence (7-4-3) hosts Seymour, Saturday; Jeff plays Corydon Central, Class 2A Floyd Central Sectional first round, Tuesday.

• Dragons blank Charlestown: Host Silver Creek scored two second-half goals to take down Charlestown on Thursday, 2-0. The Dragons’ Alexis Barnett scored in the 46th minute, followed by teammate Olivia Scarbrough in the 78th minute.

NEXT: Silver Creek (8-6-1, 3-2 Mid-Southern Conference) at Madison, Saturday; Charlestown vs. Christian Academy, Class 2A Switzerland County Sectional first round, Tuesday.



VOLLEYBALL

• Bulldogs battle through injuries to defeat Madison: Injury-plagued New Albany bounced back from a first-set loss to visiting Madison to prevail on Thursday, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20.

Alexis Lete paced the Bulldogs with 11 blocks and 10 kills, while teammate Audrey Donastorg had 16 kills and seven digs. Teammates Brook McCoy had eight kills, eight digs, three service aces and three blocks.

New Albany senior Catlin Lilly suffered another ankle injury in the first set and did not return. Also, the Bulldogs were without injured senior Nicole Jones.

“All the players on our team stepped up tonight and played outstanding,” New Albany coach John Breeding said. “We’ve asked them to step up before. We didn’t fold the tent.”

NEXT: New Albany (17-7) at the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament at Floyd Central, Saturday.

• Highlanders down Jeff: Floyd Central went on the road and defeated host Jeffersonville on Thursday, 25-8, 25-11, 25-17. For the Red Devils, Marley Edwards made 13 digs, Jena Reinhardt dished out 12 assists and Avery Brumit spiked five kills.

“Floyd took us right out of our offense with aggressive serving, and we were not able to get a whole lot of attacks,” Jeff coach Tim Cox said. “We had too many combination of errors — hitting and passing — and Floyd’s serving had a lot to do with it.”

• Rock Creek beats Generals: Rock Creek Academy knocked off host Clarksville on Thursday, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 30-28. The Lions’ Susan McCoy made 10 blocks, while teammate Kylie Tincher had 19 assists.

“It was a good win,” Rock Creek coach Jennifer Brown said. “The last game was 30-28, so obviously it was a hard-fought battle between two teams. The team is finally coming together as a unit and that’s making a lot of difference.”

For the Generals, Ali Sparkman had 26 digs and 15 kills and Katey Duggan made 12 kills and 10 digs.

NEXT: Rock Creek at Christian Academy, tonight; Clarksville (3-14) at Lanesville, Tuesday.

• Hornets prevail at Austin: Shelby Basham had 12 kills and Courtney Rappe delivered 10 kills and five blocks in Henryville’s 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-10 win at Austin on Thursday. Also for the Hornets, Jasmine Harrell made 18 digs, Haley Huddleston dished out 17 assists and Chelsea LaMotte had 16.

NEXT: Henryville hosts Orleans, Monday.

• Braves fall at West Washington: Shelbie Farvour had 14 kills and two aces as visiting Borden lost to West Washington on Thursday, 25-27, 25-15, 25-12, 25-21. Teammate Caitlin McKinley made 18 digs, and the Braves’ Leslie Beatty and Paige Kruer each had 13.

NEXT: Borden hosts Medora, Tuesday.
