LITTLE LEAGUE: C'TOWN FALLS

Walks, errors doom All-Stars in state semis

CLARKSVILLE — Errors and walks cost Charlestown’s Junior Softball All-Stars a shot at playing for Monday’s state championship at Clarksville Little League Park.

Riverfield scored 17 runs on just four hits en route to a 17-5 victory and a date in the title game with South Bend Waggoner.

Charlestown pitcher Lexi Logsdon walked 19 Riverfield batters and her defense committed five big errors in the defeat.

“When you get (to the state semifinal), you can’t walk batters and you can’t commit errors,” Charlestown manager Darrell Adams said.

“A couple of errors killed us,” Charlestown’s Leah Sherrill added. “But we tried our best.”

Charlestown’s run to the state’s Final Four — the deepest run for any Little League softball team in city history — was remarkable, Adams said.

“They earned this spot (in the Final 4), we just fell short,” he said. “I’m very proud of every one of them.”

“It’s meant a lot to Charlestown,” Sherrill said. “To think that next year’s All-Stars are going to look up to us, that’s pretty amazing. I think we’ve inspired them.”

Four walks, an error and an RBI single by Hailee Beeson gave Riverfield a quick 5-0 first-inning lead.

As it had for the entire tournament, Charlestown fought back.

Kayla Sheehan got Charlestown on the board in the second inning when she sacrificed home Morgan Eldridge, who had singled.

Charlestown tied the game with a four-run third. Sherrill got the rally started with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Two Riverfield errors on one play  allowed Brooke Adams and Logsdon to score. After a Sarah Willinger single and she went to third base on a groundout and a passed ball, a Jodi Davidson grounder scored Willinger to knot the contest at 5-5.

However, four walks and a two-RBI double by Sydney Hatter — one of her three doubles — gave the Anderson stars the lead for good.

Sherrill went 1-for-2 with two walks. No Charlestown batters had multiple hits or scored multiple runs. Riverfield’s top five batters scored 15 of the team’s 17 runs.

Aisha Richardson scored four times and Hatter had four RBIs for Riverfield.
