HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Jeff tennis defeats Creek 3-2 despite Perkins’ upset

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Silver Creek’s No. 1 tennis singles player Jacob Perkins upset Jeffersonville’s Patrick Elliott, 6-1, 6-4, but the 11th-ranked Red Devils prevailed 3-2 in the contest between Clark Counties top two boys’ tennis program.

The loss was the first for Elliott this season.

“Perkins played an unbelievable match,” Silver Creek coach Robert Briscoe said of the junior. “Elliott is a great player, but Perkins had his number today.”

“Perkins played a great match tonight,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly. “We know he’s a great player, and he definitely dictated the match.”

For Jeff, Shane Burke and Dan Ott stayed unbeaten at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, and the No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Mullins and Joseph Nikitas remained unblemished on the season. All three won in straight sets.

Burke defeated Christian Academy of Indiana transfer Jacob Loveland, 6-1 in each set. Ott downed Nick Quinkert, 6-1, 6-2, and Mullins and Nikitas also beat Jacob Barnett and David Williams, 6-1, 6-2.

“Silver Creek ranked 28th, and they’ve got a good team,” Reilly said. “Burke, that was a big win for him to win 1 and 1. It’s time in four years, (Elliott) lost and the team won. We like that we can depend on Patrick, but we have some depth, so it was nice to do that tonight.”

Silver Creek’s second win came from the No. 2 doubles team of Josh Crase and Luke Gillenwater, who defeated Jordy Rigsby and Chase Kayrouz, 6-2 and 6-2.

“Our guys were excited to get our first big test of the year,” Briscoe said. “The goal now is to keep working hard in practice and in our upcoming matches. We know we have the potential to do some great things this year. I was just pleased that the team was able to notch the victory without Patrick’s point.”

Silver Creek is back in action tonight at Scottsburg, while Jeff is off until Saturday when it will participate in the Bloomington North Invitational.

• Mustangs stay hot with 4-1 win: New Washington won for the third time in four matches with a 4-1 win over Trinity Lutheran.

Drake Krohn earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nick Nehrt at No. 1 singles.

“Drake led us today by playing very well and setting the tone for the team,” New Washington coach Wayne Davis said.

Tarren Clapp also won at No. 2 singles — 6-0 and 6-1 over Matt Mellencamp — and the Mustangs swept the doubles events.

Matt Renschler and Devin Freels easily handled Clayton Warren and Tyler Hendris at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-2. In the closest match of the night, Jacob Ramer and Daniel Hobson outdueled Chris Patmore and Chaz Mathis, 3-6, 6-2 and 6-4.

• Shorthanded Generals fall 3-2: With a No. 1 singles player, Clarksville fell to North Harrison, 3-2.

North Harrison was awarded the victory at No. 1 singles and swept the doubles events.

“We are still struggling in doubles,” Clarksville coach Stephen Welcher said. “This could have been a different story if we had our No. 1 (singles player) today, but the team has to step up when a team member is out. This was a tough loss thought we would play better int doubles.”

Austin and Alex Johnson earned the two wins for the Generals. Austin Johnson won at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lincoln Jones, while Alex Jonson defeated Adam Parr, 6-0, 6-1.

“I felt like the Johnson brothers were impressive again and are improving every match,” Welcher said.

• Highlanders drop 4-1 decision: The No. 2 doubles team of Jarrett Oldham and Ryan Smith was Floyd Central’s lone winner in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Center Grove.

Oldham and Smith defeated the Trojans’ Sam Price and Cam Hardin, 6-2, 6-4 in a match played at Seymour.

Alex Martin dropped a tight, three-set match against Austin Rudell. Martin won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the final two sets, 6-3 in each.

Tenth-ranked Center Grove won the other three matches in straight sets.

GIRLS’ GOLF

• Cleveland leads Hornets to win: Katie Cleveland shot a meet-best 43 as Henryville defeated Charlestown, 189-221 at Hidden Creek Golf Course on Wednesday.

Jenna Harrell shot a 46, Carrissa Embry a 49 and Sarah Henson a 51 for the Hornets on the par-35 course.

“Katie and Jenna played very well,” Henryville coach Robin Embry said. “Both hit the ball well, chipped and putted (well). Their entire games were good today.”

Charlestown was led by Marissa Knoebel’s 51. Natalie Thompson shot a 55.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

• Bulldogs down Corydon, 3-1: New Albany got two goals from Kamaren Cole and defeated Corydon Central, 3-1.

Cole scored one unassisted goal and got an assist from Stephanie Cotner on the other. Michelle Klueppelberg also scored for New Albany on an assist from Morgan Hutchinson.

The Bulldogs have eight days off before going to Seymour next Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

• Hornets drop five setter on Tuesday: Henryville dropped a 25-14, 25-17, 12-25, 17-25, 15-11 decision at Scottsburg on Wednesday.

Henryville coach Shallon Hill was disappointed with the loss and, in particular, the Hornets’ play in the opening set.

“Nothing about game one looked good or resembled the team we’re capable of being,” Hill said. “Obviously, I’m disappointed in a five-game loss, but all we can do is learn from our mistakes and come out ready to play Thursday night.”

The 7-2 Hornets, who play Pekin Eastern on Thursday, were led by Allison Knox’s 26 assists, three kills and a 14-for-14 service performance.

“I have to give her some credit for the two (set) wins tonight,” Hill said. “She’s smart. She knew an adjustment needed to be made and asked if we could change a thing or two. It worked.”

Brittany Pierce had 17 kills and Ashley Dickerson led Henryville with 22 digs.
